Snuck out with my 6 year old at lunchtime for his first soft plastic attempt. Hit the Scarborough rockwalls rock-hopping. After a while he started to get the hang of throwing the plastic out and flicking it along the bottom.

About an hour in, he hooked and landed a 35cm flathead on a 3" Gulp Shrimp. I think I was happier than he was. We took it in turns with the rod for the session and of course I got nothing.

Thanks for the advice on the site about getting the kids into SP fishing early. He certainly enjoyed being more active and not just sitting there with bait.

Nice stuff, Stewie. Keep at it with him and in ten years he will be taking you out fishing tying all your knots when your eyes are failing and your hands are shaking! No flathead is safe in the Peninsula now.

Yeh guys, it was a real buzz, and yes should have taken the camera. I didn't expect him to pick it up so fast and be able to cast it any distance.

Yeh, Steve. I think the 6yo could teach him something. He has even learnt a couple of knots to tie the jig.
