try somthing more like this http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/CLEARVIEW-INLINE-GLASS-FUEL-FILTER-KIT-Boat-Outboard-Universal-Ride-on-Mower-/310385327525?pt=AU_Boat_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4844683da5. its more likely to be the way you store your fuel. or if you store your motor with fuel still in the carby every time it dries out a film will be left then over time it will build up. when i am flushing my motor i remove the fuel line and let it run dry.

If you have a $2 motor use a $2 filter otherwise have a yarn to Aussie 123 and get something loke this.

Costs a few bucks but has a decent flow rate and will separate all junk and water,

When the cheepos clog up they restrict the fuel flow and you can end up burning a piston from too lean a mixture.

Cheers

Thanks mate

I have 4 of these at present which are similar waiting to go in the big boat I am building but I figured using them a bit ridiculous for a 20hp ob. ;)

I'll get one of those inline glass jobbies that dirtridder suggested from Bias tomorrow, $4 more than ebay but I get it now.

Thanks again all.

Bought the dinghy a few weeks back second hand but it hadn't been out for a decent run for 12 mths, so old fuel in tank.

I'll clean that out tomorrow as well.

I'll use it at least 3 times a week so it shouldnt be an issue with drying out but I'll follow your disconnect while flushing tip.

Thanks

Pretty sure I was advised by the mechanic at Stones Corner Marine not to run the motor dry of fuel, but can't remember the exact reason why - something to do with drying out seals or o-rings or something similar. Anyone got any educated views on this. I always used to do this with mowers and whippersnippers etc.

Probably pulled a teaspoon of crud out of that tank, all clean now and today she ran like a dream

What alot of people forget that the fuel in a 2 stroke is also the lubricant for the whole motor.

If you keep running your motor out of fuel at the end when it runs out there is no lubricant lubricating the bottom end and eventually somethings gotta give.

looking at some of this bigger fillters i dont think a little 2 stoke will pull the fuel through them. they are 200L\hour plus my 30hp use's 13\hour flat out. i had a quick look through my suzuki owner manual and it say's to run the motor dry when flushing. i have owend 2 stroke dirt bikes for over 25 years always stored my bikes this way. never had a problem with big ends sizing. i have never seen a seal in a 2 stroke carbie that would dry out as there are all brass. i would not recomend running 4 strokes dry as that are diffrent

Why would you have any problems pulling fuel through a large capacity filter?

They are less restrictive han a small one.

The problem with the small filters is when they become blocked and restrict the fuel flow eg normal fuel flow is 13l per hour and when blocked they come down to say 8 lph and you realize that performance is down and still run motor at full throttle o try and get max performance. The motor is hen running extremely lean and hole in piston results.

Also anyone still running one of the old tin fuel tanks chuck it and get a plastic or ally or stainless one. At least they do not rust out

my understanding of small motor fuel systems. if the pump is on the motor this makes it a negitive pressure system. so adding flow at the tank will reduce flow at the pump. it is different if the pump was in the tank. if you are letting you filter get that dirty, i think it would be the lest of your problems. i havent even add a filter to my system. i am confident in the filer that is stock on the motor. i am cofident in my fuel storage and matanice. if i had an under floor tank that couldnt be taken out and inspected i would have that styel of filter for shore.
