I was under the impression that they hide up at night in caves and crevices also. I thought they did the slime thing too but maybe not. I’ve never heard of any getting caught at night but did see one that had been speared at night. Probably asleep/hiding I’d imagine. This study from Japan indicates that there are far less active at night https://link.springer.com/article/10.1111/j.1444-2906.2007.01446.x

Good on you. Another nice one. Good to see.
We headed out to Green about the same time. Bite came on about 5pm for us. @Leosonfire landed a 43cm model and dropped a better one, but we had no live bait and there were quite a few pickers around. Tried dead diver whiting and cuttlefish. Wind got up to about 15 knots and it got lumpy so we moved inside Green for nothing then moved back out after the wind dropped off. Leo got a pike eel !! We came home feeling mostly defeated once again.

You have inspired me to put more time into the bay islands! Very very nice, love your reports. Thankyou.
I snuck out after work also, managed a barely legal snapper but it was a good confidence boost. Was a lovely little weather window 🙂

Spent a day out on the reef with a mate from Cairns we got a weather window and my wife and I were the deckies for the day. We started fishing before the sun came up but the sharks were early rises to. We lost good fish either big nannies or red emperor to the tax man.
We moved as soon as the sharks hit our fish but Callum got a good trout. Then he got a double hook up the top hook getting a red emperor and the bottom a coral trout.

I was next on with a good fish but as it battled more the nerves started thinking the tax man could be close. To my surprise a cod surfaced and I landed a top Cattle Dog cod. I have been after one of these beautiful fish for a long time so high fives Allround.

My wife Sheryl was on next and it turned out to be another big trout.

Callum bagged another couple of trout also then we called time on the fishing. We went for a snorkel on the beautiful Opal reef this is the best reef I have ever visited. We jumped in and the fish life was insane we saw moari wrasse, big coral trout everywhere and clown fish in their anemone. There was so many colourful fish it was hard to know where to look.
THe coral were vibrant even some of the soft corals I have never seen before. There was a giant clam shell with iridescent purple inside on its soft muscle. I didn't want to leave but after a long swim my wife tired so we headed home. I'm definately coming back to FNQ.

Bit of a late report from last week. Headed with with a few mates to fish the inclose grounds around SPB and point lookout hoping for some big snaps. The weather was less than ideal but the fish were on the chew. First drop of a pilly sees my drag screaming with a suspected big snapper but unfortunately reefed me in about five seconds. Next up my  mate lands two stonkers around the 85 mark. The other mate was up next with a massive spangley of similar size. It was turning out out to be an unreal start to a great day out.

after this every drop was producing a solid longtail, bonito or Mack tuna. We stocked up on some bonito and Mack’s for future baits and kept a few longtails for the table. We left the tuna biting and headed to chase some more reefies and we weren’t disappointed. We tried boat rock but it was totally unfishable due to the swell, wind and strong under currents. As the day went on the weather got a bit better, the fish kept coming and I managed to nail a 76cm snapper (my best so far this year). I was stoked to say the least, a quick photo and he was released as we already had two big ones in the boat.

We managed few more good sized grasses spangles and other bits and pieces. I even managed a legal tomato cod which I’ve never got this far south before aswell as some solid cods. All in all was cracking day out despite the wind and swell. Looks like I’ll be eating some quality fish for while again aswell.

Good too see you onto a good haul. Not much better than fresh squid and whiting . A word of advice not always the case but if you see some freak weather coming and you can see on bom it will pass pretty quickly and you know for a fact you can’t outrun it some times it’s safer to just drop the anchor buckle down and ride it out. Rather than trying to drive through it. Not a good feeling with the lightning though that sux no matter what you do.

    Hey All,
After seeing @Allnighter with his few snapper from the southern bay, I thought Id get myself on the water for a go before this southerly change came through.
Managed a quick trip last night fishing for only about 2hrs,
Managed a 3 fish,  with 2 around the mid 70cm  mark &  with my last fish going around 88cm and being released to fight another day. Gave a up a good fight in the deeper water of Moreton Bay.
    Enjoy 🙂
    Cheers Josh <><

Yeah mate large yakkas, we wanted to let the big one go but it had swallowed the snelled hooks and wasn’t fit for release. We got another big one later on but we were able to release it
