What is this fish? (caught in cast net)

I get this fish in my cast net all the time and have some conflicting info on what it actually is.

Can anyone tell me?

thanks guys! I thought it may have been a herring cos they die so easily....pathetic really!

I got a whole heap last night for fishing but didnt end up going so they are in my freezer :fishing:

small tip that i picked up from this site a while back, they freeze better if you line the container with paper towels and sprinkle some salt (not too much) over the paper towels first

in my book they are hands down the best live bait for estuary/canal fishing

green back herring the best bait of all the herring. they really need there own separate bait tank to keep them alive.and the best way to hook them up live is to put your hook thru the front of the eye. not thru the eye but between front of eye socket and eye.they will stay live all day.

Soo.. is this the best way to hook them?

nah actually in front of one eye on one side and out the other eye on the other side. you can get a hook thru there with very little damage. you can even take em off later and they will swim away. if i had one i would put a oick up.gunna go for bait this arv for the weekend mihgt get one then.

did you get that toady out of your fish tank put the hook thru and let him go again. nice pic where you gt it.

I got the photo from yahoo images and then photoshopped a hook through its eyes!...looks cool doesnt it!!

Mate what that is is top live bait. But I will warn you!Do Not put them within the same bucket as mullet or your mullet will choke on their scales and die. That is a Fact! And always clean your buckets well as the scales will contaminate future catches.

Thats exactly wat everyone else says it is heidii and they are awesome live baits, it was one of those that got me 1st jack,hook str8 through the back just in front of the dorsel fin up towards the head.That always works for me anway.Cheers
