MEDIA RELEASE 17th March 2012

MAJOR POLITICAL PARTIES COMMIT NOTHING TO

FRESHWATER FISHERS.

The Queensland State Government election is to be held on the 24th March 2012. The election is a

prime opportunity for political parties of all persuasions to publicly put their cards on the table, and

to commit to enhancing freshwater fishing across Queensland, Robin Caddy, President of the

Freshwater Fishing & Stocking Association of Queensland (FFSAQ) said today.

The Freshwater Fishing and Stocking Association of Queensland Inc. is the peak organization

representing freshwater fishers of Queensland. FFSAQ is the community and political voice for

stocking groups and is empowered to liaise with Government on their behalf.

Unfortunately, as of today, neither of the major political parties has provided any commitment to

elevate the future of freshwater fishers in Queensland.

Mr Caddy stated that the Liberal National Party has responded, but in a manner that is meaningless,

and made no commitments at all to enhance freshwater fishing in Queensland. The LNP elected not

to complete the questionnaire attached to FFSAQ’s “Freshwater Recreational Fishing Position

Statementâ€. It has been in their possession for over six months.

Both the Australian Labor Party and Bob Katter’s Australian Party have not responded to FFSAQ’s

Position Statement. The Queensland Greens have responded in a meaningful manner.

The lack of commitment by the major political parties is most disappointing and indicates in a

significant way that they are just not interested in augmenting better opportunities for freshwater

fishers, Mr Caddy said. There is always plenty of spin and rhetoric, but when it comes to

commitment, there is a total lack thereof.

The major political parties have had an opportunity to commit to an enhanced freshwater fishery in

Queensland, but have declined to support this extremely popular community activity.

I did read a statement a little while ago about the SIP scheme, where the minister denied that fishing had any appreciable effect on tourism.

So I guess towns like Gin Gin, Imbil, Kingaroy, Fernvale, etc would not miss having well stocked impoundments. And Straddies tourism is reliant on its other attractions, noone really goes there to fish either.

How out of touch are these clowns in their ivory towers?

What a difference from NT where they actually work in with the amateur fishos etc.

I copied this from a recent post in Sweetwater the attachment makes some interesting reading. They actually seem to appreciate the impact of recreational fishing on the economy and wish to do something to foster and protect the industry.

The Department of Resources (DoR) reminds anglers they have until the 11th of April to provide comment on the recently released Draft Development Plan for Recreational Fishing.

Minister for Fisheries Kon Vatskalis announced the development plan for recreational fishing at the AFANT AGM on the weekend.

"The plan identifies the key strategic issues facing recreational fishing over the next decade and proposes a broad range of strategies and actions to ensure we maintain and enhance the quality of our fisheries and recreational fishing opportunities" Executive Director of Fisheries Mr Ian Curnow said.

"The Development Plan addresses matters such as collection of data on recreational fishing, targeted management of fishing hotspots, fishing access and enhanced community awareness programs to increase community stewardship of our resource".

The draft plan was compiled by a community based working group which included AFANT and representatives from regional areas across the Territory.

"The working group that put the plan together have done a great job and I thank them for their time and effort" Mr Curnow said.

A copy of the Draft Development Plan for Recreational Fishing is available on the Department of Resources website, along with a link on how to submit comments: http://www.nt.gov.au/d/Fisheries/

The public, industry groups, government and non-government organisations are invited to provide written comments on the proposals raised in this Draft.

Comments close COB Wednesday 11th of April 2012.

It was the only response Brian and quite an eye opener for a party which most consider anti fishing and anti access.

Amazing direct answers without any waffle or provisos. Shame that they wont get in or hold the balance of power. Wonder what their attitude to the rust water section is.

And their rules and regulations are only a page long.

Whereas the rest of the country (especially WA) is seemingly headed towards US style regulations with different rules, size limits, bad limits for different bodies of water within a state.

As if our bl00dy tax code isn't already complex enough ...
