Sounder installation

I just installed a secondhand humminbird sounder. I havnt put it in the water yet but turned it on for a look. the simulator works ok but I dont get any bottom reading at all in normal mode. I know it needs to be in the water but I thought I might get some sort of reading.

What do most sounders show out of the water?

They show nothing but the transducer will go tick tick tick

They need the water to show anything.

Not a good idea to run them out of water for any length of time either, so I've heard.

yeah not good to have the sounder on out of water, can 'burn out' the transducer....hence the simulation mode
