Great day to hit the bay I must say

Long story short, Sunday I hit the Bay with Nick ( redgie) after we had quickly planned a trip the night before hand.

It was a latish start ( 7am) but we managed to get to our first spot not to long after that.

We started off deep to chase some bigger snaps but after a hand full of high 30’s / low 40’s we decided we would head into the shallow stuff to chase some bream and see if some pelagics had begun to move in with the colder weather. Well, they had moved in that’s for sure! With plenty of trevally not shy to smash our lures. Even though the size wasn’t there, we had a ball fishing bream gear (4lb -2lb), surface lures and extremely light drag

Boy do 40 odd cm trevally go hard! We saw a few different models from big eyes, brassy and giant trevally.

In the mix of this we got into some very healthy winter Bream (with nice blue lipstick!!) which was great fun and plenty of excitement was shown when these bigger models were sighted near the net.

I started off chucking a Sammy 65, this accounted for a few fish but as it went a bit quiet I swapped over to something a little different. Using 3inch Zman MinnowZ rigged on a 1/28th size 1/0 hidden weight! As I knew they were very buoyant, the ‘opening night’ colour choice was perfect for the clear crystal clear water and blue skies. The method was to slowly roll these on the surface to ‘entice‘ the fish to bite.

This was a good move as 80% of fish fell to this approach. The Gear of Choice was a Nordic Stage Sharpshooter, perfectly matched (as most reels do!) on my 2004 Caldia, 3lb braid – 2lb leader.

After getting stuck into countless bream and trevally, redgie who was chucking a bent minnow at the time (without too much luck) decided it was a good idea to use this technique. That paid off indeed and saw him bringing a few more fish into the boat.

** note to self, was supposed to be short.. **

to be continued ..

After that we hit some flats where I chucked the Zman Grubz 2.5 inch in bloodworm on a 1/60th hidden weight ( again slow rolling on the surface) this worked well with some more bream coming in.

All in All was an awesome day.. 20 odd bream all up, 10 or so trevally, hand full of tailor and squire to keep the excitement rolling.

Was great to get back out into the bay, can’t wait till next time as that session was just HOT!!!

And reminding me why light gear and surface fishing is just so enjoyable.

Thanks of the company redgie

Tight lines,

Runty
