Decided a fish finder is rather important, would have prevented me running aground as well as running straight into a submerged Rock grrr!

A sounder is help but not essential in my opinion. If there is a rock in front that you don't see because the transducer is normally placed at the rear of the yak, you will still hit the rock before the sounder knows what is going on. It would help if the bottom was rising, then you could action to avoid running aground.

Depends where you are going to be using it mainly. I use a my yak mainly in fresh water and skinny creeks. Carrying a battery and mounting a transducer in the yak is to much of a pain for me. The skinny creeks not have much depth and because you are casting at the structure along the bank not really a need for the sounder.

Personally I would get use to the yak and then see where it will mostly be used. Then decide if the added expense and work is worth the benefits of fitting a sounder.
