Currumbin Creek - Mouth of river 26/12/07

The bay was blown out and our usual Boxing day trip was to push us into a river. First I chose Logan but the Brother In Law said nothing in there but catfish. So we thought a go in Currumbin might be worth a look.

The ramp is a good concrete one. Fairly steep and ribbed so the two wheel drive may have a little issue with the retrieval. It did slip a little bit as the ramp was covered in sand but pulled the 5.8M unit out. Bit of a cross current with the tide running out made it a little difficult to line up for drive on but got there.

Fished under the bridge to the left of the ramp with pillies, prawn and squid. The pillies seemed to do better with the bream. Had a go with a HB as I could see the bream but they wanted nothing to do with it.

Landed two big sting rays, a handful of undersize bream, a perch and a whiting and small flattie.

Tried to head upstream but the walking bridge was too low for us to cross under, so we waited until the tide dropped some and got under around mid tide. Had to keep in mind if the tide comes in we were not getting back under that thing.

Nothing came of drifting down the river. 15lb line got smashed off by and unknown but that was it. All in all a waste of fuel and time. Will not be returning to that one.

The bar itself was blown out but went to take a look anyway. There would be no issue crossing, though for the inexperienced it is a little shallow and crossing at low tide with anything large enough to require more than 0.5m of water would have to wait until the tide turns. Very simple bar to cross. Just have to watch the banks to the starboard and not get pushed to far out port into the bay or you will get caught in breakers.
