Need help with outboard

Hi all

I had a bit of trouble with the boat on Sunday. When we were planning along the motor started to rev very hard with no thrust, we could still idle along no problem but could not go at any speed.

I am told it could be a sheer pin or bush behind the prop. I have the prop off and one washer behind it off and don't know how to get the next bit off. It has an arrow telling which way to turn it to get it off. Do I need a special tool or something because I thought about tapping it off but it seams very soft at the front like lead or somthing.

If any can help that would be great. If I'm way of track or this makes no sense I'll just have to wait and take to the pro's

If its the sheer pin or bush, you have already gone far enough. The bush is the rubber centre in the prop. the sheer pin is a bit of 2 or 3mm steel pin that goes through the prop.

Try turning the shaft by hand with the motor in gear. If it does not turn, then it was definately the rubber bush. You can get the prop reconditioned (rubber bush replaced) or buy a new one.

it would appear that your motor doesnt have a shear pin but does have a rubber drive bush this is built into the prop there is a inner sleeve that goes over the output shaft then rubber then prop all you can do is take the old prop to the boat shop and ask for a price on a new prop vs getting yours reconditioned if the old prop is worn down look at a new one for speed and economy if its ok then get a new rubber fitted to it its aproximately 100 bucks for this on my boat

can you post a pic of the prop just to make sure

it sounds to me like its just the prop but i cant say for sure without seeing the prop or the internals of the g/box!

the shaft is suppost so click when turned the oppisite way to the direction of the engaged gear and will not turn by hand in the engaged gear direction (does this make sense)

i would say if it was the g/box to be the problem you would have heard a hell of a racket/noise coming from the leg when it failed!

hence not hearing you say there was a big noise i would have to go with the prop internals failing!

if you live close by drop on in and i will have a look f.o.c for you?

cheers Ian

Thanks Rumrunner, Feral and Faulked.

It does make sense Ian and there were no nasty noises at all apart from it reving it's ring out for a short time.

My missus has dropped the prop into Coorparoo marine already.

For future reference would you have been able to fix the prop Ian with a charge of cause?

yes i can usualy do anything mechanical as long as there are no specialised tools to be used! but i can sometimes make the tools myself if needed!

ive got a mate who sells outboard parts and would have tried him for a good second hand prop or inner to fit yours first and went from there!

cheers Ian.
