I'm not sure what everyone's preferences are but I like the line to be completely parallel to the spool. For no other reason than fitting the most amount of line on it and the aesthetic symmetrical value.

i like mine parallel to the spool too. other than what you said, i think it gives a more consistent drag pressure when fish is making its run. some reels have a forward tapered spool to allow maximum casting distance but the extra distance isn't important to me.
