AUSTACKLE “King of Moreton Bay" Flathead Round

The dreaded big ‘W’s that are common for this time of the year - wind and weed- plagued anglers as they fished the Flathead round of the “King of Moreton Bay†Team Series. 34 anglers in 17 teams braved 20 knots and rain at 5am as they set out to various parts of greater Moreton Bay with the Jacobs Well /Pin area being the most popular choice.

The rain quickly disappeared as the sun got up but the northerly winds showed no signs of abating and stayed fairly constant throughout the day. There was an early morning high tide and an analysis of the anglers catch sheets handed in showed that there were 2 distinct bite periods - 6am to 8am and 2pm - 3pm.

An interesting aspect of the days fishing was the number of other species caught during the day with Bream and Jew being the most common. Snapper, Sharks, big Sea Toads and Whiting were also mentioned by anglers at final check-in, especially by the teams who scored a big doughnut on Flathead!

The winning team came from the Gold Coast. Well known Flathead anglers Brett Rayner and Chad Patterson landed 9 legal fish for a score of 496 points. Runner up for the second time in this year’s competition was Team Stradic with 309 points and third place went to Team Austackle Gold with 258 points. The Austackle team also landed the biggest Flathead of the day - a fantastic fish of 86cms. They also nailed a big Jew which they were calling a big Flathead initially until it peeled off over half a spool of line as it made its run for freedom.

The Whiting round will be fished on Sunday October 23rd with the briefing the night before at the Redlands Multi-Sports Headquarters at Birkdale. We look forward to seeing all the teams again along with any new comers who wish to join in the fun and win some fantastic prizes. Remember you don’t have to be a great fisherman to win a prize. Thousands of dollars of prizes are given away randomly which you win simply by being there.

That is a huge flatty. Would have been tough fishing this weekend

It was very tough going.

You were being kind to mother nature calling 'em 20knots winds lol.

Cabbage Tree boat ramp at 4:45 was well over 30 lol - we nearly got blown off the boat ramp haha

Thanks for organising the event Mike, pretty happy with 4th for my first comp, even if it did take nearly all day to land my first fish !!!

I was going off the forecasts Manni but when i stood at Jacobs Well jetty at 4-50am it was strong enough to blow a dog off a chain!

Glad you had a good time and hope we see you at the Whiting round mate.

Thanks Mike, We might be moving house that weekend, if we aren't moving then we will enter again.

For anyone interested in weather readings, whilst standing on the boat ramp i looked up seabreeze, and at 5am it was listed as 8 knots, they were about 20 knots off the mark :huh:

I think the Whiting round will sort quite a few people ut actually. Not too many Tournament guys actually target whiting - especially in daylight hours so it wont be any easy thing. But then again thats the whole point of this comp - to find the really good all round anglers not just a species specialist.

Mate I'll be using plastics and hardbodies like I have the hole comps fishing an area where I've caught some whiting before on plastics I love a challenge so all ways wiling to push it to limits and try something new let's see how we go

Well if you happen to win the overall comp then nobody can begrudge you of your title. Its a tough comp to win and not by accident. No point in calling somebody "king" if its too easy.
