braid v mono

im looking to set up a light sp rod for young fella,im happy with my set-up of braid etc.he only wants to put mono on his,so does anyone else do this ,is it a huge disadvantage etc.i think he just wants to run it straight through to his jig,no leader etc.john

Braid is significantly better for sp fishing as it gives you alot more sensitivity to even the subtle hits and gives you better insight into what the plastic is doing, ie on the bottom yet etc.

You can just run a fluorocarbon straight through depending on what you are chasing. Braid is a much better option for an allrounder as you can then vary your leader size to suit different target species. Mono will certainly have better abrasion resistance but will be more difficult to cast light plastics with and stretches a lot so striking may not set the hook properly. Fluorocarbon straight through is probably best left to the 4lb and under bream combos, try and steer him towards braid.

Braid is definitly much better if he's fishing with plastics.

I'm posting a for sale thread next week with some cheap second hand braid if you can hold out until then.
