We have started finding them out in 98m off Gladstone lately.

That is very rare to find them so deep, especially mixed in with reds

A few people have told they are 'good to eat'. I kept one in the 50s once with the plans of eating it, bled it and put it on ice. I filleted one side and the flesh was like mulberry red, so wasn't game enough to continue. Mud crabs love catfish, so I generally just trade them into that.

Agree with everyone though, the old catfish puts up a decent fight.

Apparently the open water cats taste good I don't want to find out. 

 

Plenty of them in the shipping channel outside of Mackay. They pull hard. Still can't beat st bees for quality reefies. The amount there so close to home is crazy.

We used to eat them out of the Mullumbimby river. They are very firm but tasty. Just watch those spines!
