Milk powder from the 60's

Probably sounds stupid but we were talking about powdered milk.

We used to get Sunshine brand but there was another one in a blue box

I was thinking it was called CMA or CDA milk.

Anybody remember back then, yeah a lot will say " what's powdered milk " 

but in the bush we didn't get fresh unless at home, and you milked the cows.

I grew up with it.

If you wanted corn flakes in the morning you had powdered milk.

I had a lot of powdered milk growing up. Even "skim" powdered milk. Neba apuckted wnee...

Also got straight from cow... Powdered stuff is a convenient source of available nourishment... But... Not pleasurable in my experience...

Full cream for me.

My mother had 12 kids so had to stretch the food where possible. We used to get 6 pints of milk delivered ( there used to be “milkmen” back then).  Mum would cut it with powdered milk to make 12 pints. Milk is the only food I don’t like, but it is not because of that - it was the third of a pint school milk bottles that were always left in the sun before we were forced to drink it at little lunch. The rich kids had flavoured straws to hide the rancid taste, but the rest of us had to drink it straight. Yuk! Sorry @Angry51, I don’t know the brand you are trying to think of.

I wasn't around in the 60's I would have to search places other than black and white memories

Giggle searches don't show any 1960's images for powdered milk....I remember Sunshine and Nestles.

Although a 2000's child I do know what it is. I remember we used to get some woodworking and framing done by a man in Paddington and he lived in his shop. On his little kitchen table he would always have a tin of powdered milk.

To answer a few comments:,,

It is still used in bread/cake making, we use it in bread making here at home

as we are 90k's from town.

I used to love the school milk. Ours used to turn up right on smoko so was really cold.

We use long life for tea/coffee.

I was given it straight, not in coffee as I was only born in 64. Not as nice as the real stuff that I was used to.

I love buying that pure milk from up north that hasn't

been past your eyes or watered down.

You've gotta shake the bottle to get the cream mixed up so you

can pour it out.

Probably not good for your diet but sure tastes good.

I think I know what’s going on here, @Angry51was cleaning out his shed and stumbled upon some old school powdered milk, the packaging & label are quite tatty and impossible to read as it’s been in there for 30+ years, being the frugal bushy that he is, he’s trying to work out just what brand it is so he can jump online and bring up the MSDS, that way he can ascertain if it’s still good to use in his cuppa, or his breakfast, Hahahaha,

My only advice to you @Angry51is it’s not worth the risk, treat yourself to some brand new powder.

We used to have fresh from the cow milk when we could, a local a couple of miles away had a few cows, we used to barter eggs for it - we had lots of chooks. Also had powdered milk, a bit, but fresh was best.
Sorry, I can't remember it in a blue box or tin though.

I remember my nephews faces when they saw a record being played... Couldn't get their little scones around it...

Until I was 14 it was my job to get up, light the wood stove and milk the cow. Never had powdered milk and when we got rid of the cow due to urbanisation never drank straight milk again.

Apparently a lot can't read the time either, if it's not on a digital clock and apparently a lot don't know how to tie shoelaces.

And; handy to know if you live in the city, they can't steal your car if it's not automatic as they can't drive a manual !

Blue box in the fridge was bicarb soda. 

 

 

I remember the empty milk bottles in the steel carry cage left up the front with an envelope of money. 

 I used to race home from school, pop the ally lids off the new bottles and scoop the cream out with a spoon. 

Yum...

So @Angry51, my parents are staying at the moment. My mother says that you are right about the powdered milk in a blue box/ tin. Initially she said "Diploma". I told her you had been thinking cda or something like that and she went hmmm "yes, there was something like that". 

She can't remember at the moment, but said she knows exactly where to find out when she gets home. She has an old recipe for custard which calls for that brand. Will get the answer for you.

My father is no use on that one as his old man had a milk run on the Atherton Tablelands.... If he ever stops finding things to fix and tidy here, Mum can look at the recipe when she gets home....

Those were the days all right, we had to get to the milk bottles before the magpies or crows got stuck into the lids. Don't know what their fascination was for the lids, maybe it was because they were shiny or something. I can't imagine they were after the cream but who knows? I also grew up on powdered milk, we didn't own a fridge in those days as we had just come to Australia so powdered milk it was! It was a few years later we started to get deliveries of bottled milk.

Where we came from, we didn't have Corn Flakes, so my Mum used to add the made up powdered milk, warmed it and then added it to Corn flakes, and to top it off gave it to us about 5 minutes later, do you guys have any idea what that horrible gluggy concoction tasted like?Yuk!!

So you were right with CDA @Angry51. That's what was called for in the recipe anyway. Can't find it on Google though.

I grew up with CDA powered milk in caboolture QLD back in the 60's and 70's and yes CDA was in a blue box , when the parents were away we use to put a whole heap into a glass and a tiny drop of water and turn it into a gooey paste which by the way was so good , to this day i sometimes do the same thing ,
