Hi

I'm from Poland and came here 3 weeks ago. I had a job here so I hope I will stay here quite long. But most of the free time I spent in my hotel in West End close to the river.

I love fishing but did it only in europe. I even don't know any of your fish species. I can see that u catch also prawns????

So here are my question

1. I want to go and fish in Brisbane river (catch & release)- do I need any permision? If yes where can I get/buy it?

2. Is in the city centre allow or forbidden fishing in river? Is it worth fishing in this place? Are there any fish? I would fishing from the bank- I have got no boat.

3. Where is the shop with fishing stuff in Brisbane?

4. What stuff should I buy? I think mostly about fishing in the river. Any special models? Any ideas? I took nothing from Poland.I have to complete everything.

5. What fish are in the Brisbane river? And what lures should I use?

Please help me

Hey mate and welcome aboard!

For starters to see what sort of fish can be caught in the river cjeck this thread out:

Secondly to answer some of your question.

Yes you can fish in the city.

No you dont need to buy a permit.

If you are catch and release fishing that great. The river is full of good fish, and if you are just there to have some fun, there are millions of catfish so if you use a smelly meat bait (steak, mullet etc) you will be almost assured some fun with catfish and maybe some bream and other such fish.

Lastly, we at AFO often have events, meets etc. Keep an eye on the "Going Fishing" and "Fishing Events" section of the forum.

New members are always welcomed we encourage them to get involved.

Welcome to Australia mate and Brisbane Fishing Online.

Cheers.

Angus

1. No permission is required

2. You can fish anywhere in the river aslong as theirs no signs saying no fishing, such as private jetties/pontoons.

3. The best well all over brisbane, Their is Jones Tackle at Lutwyche, Amart All Sports, BCF (Boating Camping Fishing), Tackle Warehouse at Cooparoo.

4. Try and get a 2-4kg spinning rod with a 2000 or 2500 size spinning reel with 6 or 8lb line. And if possible get a bigger setup of about 6kg with a 4000 size spinning reel with 15lb line. Buy a selection of hooks, Longshanks, Wide Mouth, Live Bait, Get a few sizes of sinkers and some swivels. For this gear i would go to a very specialist tackle store and get hands on help from an expert. Im not sure where West End is but if its close to Cooparoo then go to Tackle Warehouse, If its close to Lutwyche go to Jones Tackle.

5. All types of fish, Bream, Whiting, Flathead, Cod, Salmon, Toad, Catfish, Stingray,, Just to name a few. And i would be trying some Halco lures at first get some around 40mm and some around 60-70mm and try these out (These are around $10 each) And if u want something better go for an Ecogear SX40, these are usually $18.

Cheers

thank you very much. I have to learn the navigation- whats going on on your webpage.

Events? That could be interesting and vey useful to learn from all of you.

Shops? I tried this in google but I could see mostly online shops. I need a shop where the seller can advice me what I should buy. You know- I know nothing- even your numbers of the fishing stuff are different than in Europe so I can't buy it online. Just need much help.

I didn't see anybody fishing when I was walking near the river? Isn't it popular here?

Where are the best results in Brisbane River? night?day? what hours? summer? winter?

People generally fish on the weekends here and also have special spots that they have found, I just looked on a map and if u go to woolongabba their is a store called "Mossops" (Google "mossops fishing tackle brisbane") and they are a good store and will be able to help you out. You will learn the best time to fish try whenever u like, I like to say - U cant catch a thing if ure not out their.

Also great answer but I have to check how is lbs according to kg :)

In Europe we use mostly kg :)

I don'yt know about the difference in spinning rod but I think that using this 2-4kg- the fight with the fish would be more interesting and I could feel the lures better.

Or maybe will I regret because bigger fish happens often???

hmmm?

I will buy also these lures at the beginning and maybe will check everything this weekend. I only have to locate these shops.

Hi

Finally I was in this store. I bought a spinning road plus reel but there was only a few reels- mostly Daiwa which has not good reputation in Europe. I was surprised that there was almost no choice in reels. Nevermind. I bought 2000 very simple in the beginning, but also some lures- the same as you told me and when I was coming back home I was going close to the brisbane river but in the centre. I didn't catch anything but lost one HALCO lure :)

But fishing is not only about fish- I spent a great day! :)

I don't know how to use these smaller lures- they are not enough heavy- I can't feel it on my rod :(
