Overheads for Esturies??

lt obvious

Recommended Posts

depends really, what size are we talking

i use a 400 size baitcaster with a ratchet for livebaiting threadies/jew/etc

i generally prefer baitcasters to threadlines but i use a 3500 shimano baitrunner for the same purpose..

realistically you won't need an overheads capacity for really anything in the river, big sharks an exclusion to this rule and it all boils down to what you feel more comfortable with. i prefer using my baitcaster cause i just feel more comfortable with it, i am in more direct contact with the bait i can tell exactly when it hits bottom etc

your mileage may vary

I like spin gear for soft plastics, but prefer overheads for bait fishing. I like the ability to freespool when dealing with current or finicky fish and this is really easy with an overhead. I guess baitrunners give you the best of both worlds, but there is just a bit more "feel" with an overhead. Even with hardbodies, I find you ahve better control over the casting distance with a baitcaster, provided you ahve the right rod and reel combo for the job.
