Custom fabricated extra heavy duty rod holders

Hi guys,

Not many of you will know that aside from lure-making, I also have a number of welding qualifications (before anyone asks, aluminium is not my area :P )

I was recently asked to make some super sturdy rod holders to handle expensive combos and withstand savage strikes and sustained heavy drag pressures. A weak holder could mean $500 or more flying into the river so no compromise went into what I came up with.

They have been pretty over-built with 3mm stainless steel tube and a unique design that allows for the strongest angles for holding strength, while maintaining the best rod angle for converting strikes to hookups.

Price for the basic model pictured is $45 (tube length of 180mm) and I'm happy to discuss any personal requirements further, with a price on request for custom dimensions/designs.

cheers fellas

I'm glad you asked Jono, I am working on an accessory to enable this one to be used in sand as well as turf, and i will update when i get some results on that. But in it's bare form I wouldn't use this one on the beach, the spike is too short for sand.

Well guys, I've been bouncing ideas off Kurt all week for a specialised custom rod for his big game sharking exploits off the beach, and come up with this weapon.

twin 1m long spikes, custom length tube with fully welded gimbal attachment, flat hammering plate to get it deep into the sand and (not pictured in the proto model here) 2 safety lanyard attachments.

Spent the day on the ocean side of Bribie testing it out, was unable to shift it with maxed drag on the little charter special which is around 8kg.

Tested in dry, medium and wet sand. Got some friends to help out and test it's weight carrying capacity by standing ontop of it (the idea being for heavy setups etc) and they didnt move it either, while supporting the full weight of two adults (albeit small ones :D) so basically it's staying put

Price of this model considering time and materials is going to be around the $100 mark, but I will consider a lighter duty beach holder for a cheaper price in the future- this one is meant for serious combos and big sustained drag pressures.

The flat plate visible part way down the spikes in the last shot is there to add strength and rigidity, I would recommend hammering the holder in to where that plate is just visible above the sand, even though in the above pic my mates full bodyweight is supported with roughly 1/2 the spike in the ground.

I can't imagine a situation where more strength would be required than this holder showed during todays testing, we snapped the 30lb mono clean numerous times and it didn't come close to dislodging or losing it's angle.

cheers for reading

Dan

  • 2 weeks later...
