Pesky Choppers

Hi all

Was out on the reef yesterday and just after dark, after a few squire, the choppers come in and started stealing my hooks..

Switched to some light steel trace which promptly put off the bites. Couldn't lose a bait.

So has any one got a rig that saves tackle and still leaves you open to a squire if one happens along.

I would say I lost $15 to $20 of hooks in about a hour and a half. Only caught the one tailor in that time.

Now I ask this as gang hooks are to much fire power on the smaller squire you catch in close.

You could maybe try some clear plastic tubing abOve the eye of the hook? Other than that my only idea was gangs

I dunno if it'll affect your squire catch, but I've been tying on an extra bit of up to 40lb leader at the end of my normal leader to stop the tailor cutting through it. Only about 15cm worth at the end.

Gang of 3 x 3/0's will easily hook any legal size squire and stop the tailor biting the line (unless they are really thick and a second fish is hitting as happens sometimes). Unless I am in an area where catching smaller grassies is probable I dont use less than a 3/0 for squire.
