Luggage Point 16-8-07

I had to make a trip into the airport today so I tossed in a rod and some SP.

I headed out to Luggage Point where I was greeted by the top of a high tide. I parked the car grabbed my gear and headed out the only firm sand spit. I started to toss around a 3\" powerbait minnow in Blood Worm targeting the deeper water adjacent to a pole sitting alone in the river. After about a dozen or so cast I got my first good bump, felling confident I targeted the spot again, the cast was spot on. With a lift lift wind action I brought the lure past the pole again this time nothing.. on the last lift about 5m in front of me.. bang I got a nice hit and run.. A nice 35cm Dusky Flathead (no pic, we all know what an under size flattie looks like).

I tossed the minnow around again and after no action then snagging a change in lure was forced. I tied on a Minnow Grub, I choose a slow roll as the retrieve action and was soon rewarded with a good hit bit no real run this time.. again the hit was in the last few winds before re-casting, this time I was surprised to see a Sole attached to the SP.

All in all a fun 90 min fish 2 landed and another species added to the SP catches.

I have attached a pic of the sole, notice how well the fish’s camo blends with the sand, and the SP that did the damage. [img size=460]http://www.australianfishing.com.au/media/kunena/attachments/legacy/images/sole.JPG

I did keep him in the bucket to eat but as the only other fish I got was undersize, I let him go as alone he wast much of a meal. I have eaten them before and they are fantastic.. a few bones but well worth it.. one of the best eating fish I have had.

I had a vid of his release just youtubing it now.

I have caught a few of these in WA, the one I ate was about 50% bigger.

Notice the Minnow Grub - it is meant to be a Nuclear Chicken but it had no green in it at all.

Here is the release vid ...

I thought it was a Southern Peacock Sole but they only grow to 15cm where the Panther Flounder grows to 30cm and my catch was 31cm....Bothus pantherinus Panther Flounder

On the Peacock Flounder \".. The eyes stick up from just the dorsal side of the body and there is a wide space between them.\" the eyes on mine didnt stick up..

I think it is a a large tooth flounder http://www.fish.gov.au/fishnames/fishnames.php?pid=4397

or a Panther Flounder http://www.amonline.net.au/fishes/fishfacts/fish/bpanther.htm
