Expert advice on purchasing an EPIRB!! :>

I bought one of these from a local person (works at the Redcliffe Coastguard and conducts the VHF radio course as well. The one I purchased is Australian Made and Owned and has a 10 year battery life (apparently longer but the certification board would only issue 10 years!

Personally, I would spend the extra for the GPS model (I have young Kids) as the location is narrowed down significantly. The only other variable is how long it takes the search team to get to you. I did read on the website conflicting information;

** Whilst the GPS receiver has an accuracy of 1.8 metres, search-and-rescue authorities advise that the maximum accuracy they can resolve in all cases from an EPIRB is 120 metres.

I am not sure if this is true for all EPIRBS or just the GPS model.

An exampple of where a GPS helps is in a fast current situation, where the Epirb (non gps) takes longer to update it's signal, where a GPS model updates every 5 minutes.

Anyhow, good luck with your purchase and an EPIRB is better than no EPIRB,.. others will probably have more info on this.
