Offshore Mixed Bag

Recommended Posts

Went offshore with Dropbear (Robbie) and Lance and hit some reefies up, we drifted some deeper water 1st up and had good success early then it slowed down and we had to work hard for the snapper. We ended up with 9 snapper before they went completely off the bite so we then moved down to my rock where we anchored and got stuck in to some moses perch, trevally, dart and a couple of kingies.

It was a bit of fun as we had enough action to keep us busy till the bait ran out then it was time to head home the weather was perfect on the way back to the ramp and was great all day. It was Robbie's 1st trip out with me and he was good value he got a good feed of fish to take home and I know he is chewing through most of it already I guess he will hit me up for another trip soon, here is the final tally and I will let Robbie put up more photos he took as I saw him clicking away through the day.20170725_153009.thumb.jpg.f2bc7aef466cffae5ef107f9e0b4ee81.jpg

Good feed there fella, well done. How small a hook did you need to use to catch the dart?

With dart use any small piece of bait and any hook from 3/0 down and in close to the rock the dart are thick all year round

The dart were so thick. you could catch as many as you like. I took 4 and stopped catching them then. I had a 3/0 suicide hook but you could use anything from about 1/0 to 4/0. It was literally as easy as looping the bait out. No sinker just the hook tied to directly to the line. They would have taken anything Id say but they ate pillys this time. tugger and lance were not keen to eat dart. Photos now... sorry for the delay.

Thanks @tugger for taking me out. This was a fantastic trip for me. I learnt so much from Tugger and Lance. They have an enormous about of angling and fishing knowledge and are very generous with sharing. :)

The westerlies can be a bit strong in the mornings but the bar was stunning with no white water at all.

I'm sure many of you know the anchoring routine at the rock, but it was all in control. 20150424_105247.thumb.jpg.99e918c1c5c544cc77f1a90bbc6f0b00.jpg

The guys caught many snapper. We all dropped xxos fish for some reason. I think there would have been nearly 10 very large snappers dropped for the day. Lance thought they were more mouthing the baits rather than inhaling them. 20170725_060109.thumb.jpg.e0c86051df3999d0bc3d97944dcec81b.jpg20170725_061346.thumb.jpg.4d7e1acc24a25be031c14eac4dc6c95f.jpg

I caught 3 snapper and a PB Moses that I'm stoked at. Tugger got the largest of the MPs and he got a nice legal king fish as well.

I also kept some of the trevally that we had in a red coconut curry thing and they ate realllly well. Yummo. I'm not sure if my propensity to take the less traditional table fish home will get me banned from another trip haha.

Somehow we didn't hook the diver that swam straight under the boat... twice... and shut down the MP bite. Oh well we did pretty well!20170725_070211.thumb.jpg.221ec97185ef260ec22e835be9effa47.jpg

The dart were swimming around the boat in a huge school. Luckily they didn't touch the baits as we dropped them down but were very easy to catch when I put on a smaller unweighted hook.

The trip home was glassy and nice. passing shag rock it was stunning and gliding along Frenchmans and over the calm bar.

I hope I get invited along again.... :)

Oh well here are some photos.
