Choice of rods ??

Recommended Posts

thats a good question ando. Id say if he is just doing basic river fishing a ugly stick platinum i fish 9lb he might want to try a bit heavier. if you want to specialise then u will have to say what exactly u are after. but yeah u will get anything from bream to bass and eels to sharks on an ugly stick platinum, there a very powerfull rod. then if you want put some braid on and then it gets ever more powerfull.

AMte they fly fish for everything in Australia.

And i mean EVERYTHING.

I have seen great articles on fly fishing for Marlin of the coast of queensland.

Also very successful for salt water species such as trevally and flathead.

Basically as you are simulating a live prey, anything you catch on SP's or live bait will be able to be caught on fly.

Angus.

P.S. I am pretty dam useless with a fly rod so i stck the regulay Alvey reels, spinning reels and baitcasters.

By the way if you want a starting off rod that you can use anywhere and for anything, its really hard to bat a medium sized alvey rod and reel. Some people on this site would argue with me about that. But i have caught al sorts of fish in teh bay, river, boat, islands - fresh and salt water, all with a good alvey.

ive been looking at the alvey reels on the net and its not normal to use this type of reel in the uk although i am one of the few who use a centrepin reel like the alvey. Centrpins in the Uk are not able to be turned through90 degrees to allow further casting though. Why would you use this type of reel against the bait cast type ??

just dug down in my old box from years gone by and i have just found an old shakespear lincoln graphite centrepin reel which turns sideways to allow for an extended cast so im gonna spool it up and start practising. Looking at it it looks very similar to a model on the alvey website

I would use this style due to its versitility.

They can used pretty much anywhere for anything.

However, if your planning on SP fishing or anything they useless.

Youll get away with casting silver spinning pures with these off the rocks.

But they really are bait rods.

However for someone who will just be learnign about our fish and fishing locations i would certainly say thats the best way to start. I have been usin Alveys for about 20 years, bearing in mind im oly 24 i have obviosuly found them to be reliable!

And if you keep them clean etc they will last an age.

Angus.

$30 for a cheap combo ??

you cant even buy a cheap fly rod here for under £100 ( approx $250 ) but i think thats alot to do with the fact theres hardly any shops selling the stuff so the proce goes up ???

when i get to brisbane god help the first tackle shop i find - there gonna think christmas has arrived early ( or late depending when it is ) i just cant wait. Started to sell of some stuff already now.

mate, if i was you realy should buy all ur gear over here to match the fishing you will be doing.

fly fsihng is an exepnsive sport, you have to get all the write equipment, the chead combos are jsut a watst of money and no point of getting.

But a good sport of u can master it and lots of fun (so iv herd

yeah ando these are cheap rods but they can still land good fish, my mate allmost landed a GT on mine but it spat the hook. i have caught my fair share of decent fish on it. also u dont need to get expensive gear for fly fishing, i broke my good fly rod doing mullet fishign and thatw as a $250 combo. Also in reguard ugly sticks are good value for money in my opinion but dont do what that chick does on the add. Trust me the rod cant handle such bending and will break i read an artical on it.

Lee what do you want to catch?

Once thats been established i reckon we could be of a lot more help.

i pesonally like both Shark and Estuary fishing.

Lots of people reef fish here, but i prefer my land based scenery.

For fresh water i like bass.

im not too sure what to expect with regards species angus but i like the sound of being land based to start with on the rivers as well as estuary and shore. I equally like the idea of lake/dam fishing and as i drive and plan to purchase a vehicle soon after arriving then travelling shouldnt be a problem. i Realsie that this may mean that i need several different types of setups.

Also not too sure where we will end up settling within brisbane yet - are there any suburbs or surrounding areas that are better than others regards fishing ??? maybe a pointer in the right direction could make me start to sway the missus towards areas ???

all the info we are getting sent thru at the mo tends to be within 20km of CBD .not sure if theres nice areas further afield ???

prices seem to vary alot too .... we had a nice place in kurwongbah sent thru last week which i think is near the PINE which was reasonable price but cant find info on area.

Mate areas differ greatly.

The river runs right through teh middle of teh city so thats no a problem.

The bay is like 30mins from most places (depending on where you want to go). And the dams a little further a field but nothing serous. Then you ca get to Noosa (gun for fishing) or in an Hour and a half max or te gold coast in an hour from pretty much anywhere. So There is always somewhere to go. What are you planning on doing in Australia? Like will you be working in the citY? This could have a serious effect on where you move as well. For example if you have to work in teh city, living near the Pine could be a pain in teh arse due to traffic.

Regarding set ups. Yeah i think everyone has at least two set ups. If i was starting out however, an middle sized alvey reel and rod i would think should be great for river and bay. Andmaybe a lighter spinning rod for Estuary and lake. This way you can rig it up with SP's, Small hard bodies or bait. Get some good quality line and a good quality set up and this set up will still be able to land you some very decent fish.

Also most of those salmon on teh website are caught on heavy Handlines!

Cheers

Angus.
