Lake Facts

Lake Lenthall is located 36kms west south-west of the city of Hervey Bay and lies to the west of the Bruce Highway. Nestled in the lush Wongi State Forest and accessible via a gravel road, Lake Lenthall is a haven for those wanting a peaceful fishing or picnicking experience. The lake is also the primary source of water supply to Hervey Bay.

The access road to the Lake Lenthall recreation area is unsealed gravel track, which requires slow speeds and care to be taken.

Lenthall Dam

Nearest Airports:

Approx. 35-45 mins drive to Lake Lenthall • Maryborough • Hervey Bay

Lake Lenthall covers an area of approximately 400 hectares, with a shoreline of about 53 kilometres. At full storage level it has a capacity of 17,800 mega-litres. The dam wall is 350 metres long. Crest gates were installed on the dam wall in early 2007, effectively increasing the storage capacity of the dam to 28,000ML.

There are future plans to establish camping areas at Lake Lenthall. Contact Wide Bay Water Corporation to check the status of this work before planning your trip. Camping is permitted at the nearby Wongi Waterholes, about 15km away in the Wongi State Forest Park. For further information contact the Environmental Protection Agency on 13 1304 or 07 4121 1800.

PUBLIC INFORMATION NOTICE - LENTHALL DAM

LENTHALLS DAM ACCESS AND BOATING RESTRICTIONS

Wide Bay Water Corporation’s primary drinking water storage, Lake Lenthall, offers a unique recreation opportunity for the public. Historically, boating restrictions on the lake were implemented to maintain the safe, quiet and peaceful ambience of the site for both passive and active recreation while at the same time achieving the primary objective of the lake which is that of providing high quality water for the City of Hervey Bay.

Recent advances in outboard engine technology have resulted in a significant reduction in engine emissions from newer clean engines. For example a 60hp 4-stroke or Direct Injection 2-Stroke engine emits less than 50% of the emissions as a 6hp carburetted 2-Stroke engine. These advances have warranted a review of the boating restrictions.

From 1 December 2007 boating restrictions at Lake Lenthall will allow:

* • Speed Limit 6 knots - no wash and no skiing

* • 4-Stroke and Direct Injection 2-Stroke engines up to 60hp. This equates to all 2 & 3 Star OEDA (Outboard Engine Distributors Association) rated engines.

* • 1 to 6hp traditional 2-Strokes (0 and 1 star OEDA rated) permitted until January 2010.

Wide Bay Water Corporation Rangers have been suitably trained by representatives of the Outboard Engine Distributors Association of Australia to identify compliant engines.

Non-compliant engines (eg: 2 stroke carburettor and fuel injected outboards) are prohibited from using the lake. Additional restriction may be imposed on those engines that are clearly polluting the water (eg Smokey engines).

The Wide Bay Water Corporation laboratory has also been engaged to conduct routine hydrocarbon monitoring within the lake to monitor the impacting of fuel powered boats on the lake.

Please note that currently the only Direct Injection 2-Stroke engines available in Australia are the Evinrude E-TEC and Tohatsu TLDI.

See www.oeda.com.au for more details.

Facilities:

Lake Lenthall has established a strong reputation for its Australian bass stocks and is regarded as one of the most consistent bass fisheries in the country. Yellow belly (golden perch) is also caught in good numbers and there have been recent reports of barramundi catches. Visitors can enjoy the picnic area near the dam overlooking the lake or explore the walks along paths that follow the shoreline. The lake attracts a plethora of native flora and fauna and bird-watching is a must. Look out for the rare Black Breasted Button Quail.

There is also a viewing platform above the spillway that can be accessed on foot.

Lenthall Dam

Currently no camping is permitted at Lenthall’s Dam, but is allowed at the nearby Wongi Waterholes (Qld Parks & Wildlife).

Wide Bay Water Corporation is undertaking a substantial upgrade of the Lake Lenthall recreational area. New roads, parking and walking tracks have been established and new toilets are planned to be installed.

All the new facilities will be wheelchair accessible.

A new boat ramp has been installed and powerboats up to 4.5 kilowatts (6 horsepower) are allowed but speeds are restricted to a maximum of 4 knots ensuring a quiet ambience for the enjoyment of all visitors. Work will be ongoing over the 2007-2008 financial year.

During the construction period, in order to maintain public safety, the construction access gates will only be open between 6 am and 4 pm (closed overnight).

Current facilities include:

* Toilets

* Picnic area

* Viewing platform above the spillway

* Walking tracks

* Boat ramp

* Easy parking

* Disabled access

There are no public phones at Lake Lenthall. Nearest fuel, bait and tackle are at service stations along the Bruce Highway.

Fishing:

Each year, the Fraser Coast Fish Stocking Association stock Lake Lenthall with fingerlings. Since 1984, almost 450,000 fingerlings have been released including: barramundi, Australian bass, golden perch (yellow belly) and silver perch.

A Stocked Impoundment Permit (SIP) is required to fish at Lake Lenthall. These are available at Australia Post offices throughout Queensland, locally at the roadhouse a few kilometres north of the turnoff, on the Bruce Highway, or fishing supply stores in Hervey Bay and Maryborough. Alternatively, they can be purchased online via the DPI website: http://www.dpi.qld.gov.au/fishweb/

Standard fishing bag and size limits apply at Lake Lenthall.

More information can be obtained from the Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol, Hervey Bay on Tel: 07 4125 3989.

Boating is allowed on Lake Lenthall, however, as it is the main water source providing drinking water for Hervey Bay, restrictions apply to ensure the water is not contaminated by oil, fuel or soil from bank erosion caused by boat wash. A speed limit of 4 knots applies and motor size is restricted to 4.5 kilowatts (6 horsepower). These boating restrictions are enforced by onsite Rangers and the Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol (Dept of Primary Industries) and fines do apply.

Ray that's great but I was thinking why would I want to take my glass boat down that horrible dirt road at 80kph?

Also if I can go 6knotts top speed wouldn't my electric tinny be more suitable?

But there is Monduran Dam, where the Barra are, to be considered.

Crap I need to take both boats.

Help what do I do?:S
