Went for a fish in  the Gold Coast seaway today. Tried jigging for some liveies at wavebreak island. Caught a couple of things I haven't seen before. Didn't get a pic but they were about 100mm long. Round shape with a long fin on top and bottom. Fish was silver and the fins went to yellow with black tips on them ..Mate reckons they were a fairy fish  Think he's the fairy

Thanks Hamish yes that looks like what they were.. Are they good for anything ?  How about for bait

Now having another good look at the pic mine had a long fin about 3 -4 cm with a black tip on the end

Hey Kenne

If you can be bothered to fillet or cook up a heap, they're supposed to taste alright. I don't know if it would be worth the effort though. I've never heard of them going for bait, but you could always chop one up or live bait one and see how they go. They are pretty common, so I suppose there's a good chance that's what you got!

p.s the fish in the photo is upside down. Maybe that is confusing the I.D.

Yes. Just the way I took it in some old report. Lol.

He looked that shape but his or her top fin was a long skinny fin wit a black tip on the end

And the length of the fin depends on the actual size of the fish in the photo. It’s all about perspective.

butter bream actually make surprisingly good flesh baits. Never bothered to eat one as I am usually too annoyed at them for stealing a bait to think about it.
