queensland jewfish and threadfin setup

Hi guys,

I will be fishing the port of bisbane for jewfish and threadfin and later in the day for some flathead and snapper. Will a 1-4kg rod and 2500 reel be heavy enough for jewfish and threadfin? I will be using lures.

Probably not. Especially with sharks around you will be lucky to land one. 20lb minimum, 30lb is good, some people use 50lb

Make sure you tie on a heavier leader like 30/50 pounds for the threadfin and jew, you might struggle releasing a big thready if you fight it for a long time on light line.

im gonna have a setup with 30lb and a setup with 15lb should be fine

Doable but I would say not ideal land based. I don't think they fight dirty but it might take a while to reel in land based.

That setup sounds like good fun but I'd go a bit heavier. Slightly heavier rod and a 3000-4000 reel for lures.

ill be fishing on a boat off the port of brisbane and maybe a few reefs

It is doable but not recomended...the threadies and jew will die from the fight.

I have caught two threadies in the pine in 4m of water on 1-4kg rod     both fish died.

I would be opting for 5-8kg rods and at least 15lb braid with 30lb leader minumum.

I've done a lot of fishing with that class of set up, it's too light for cod and barra so I'd say it's definitely light for any reasonable size threadfin or jewellery fish.

Will it work in a pinch, yes, is it ideal, definitely not. I caught a 95cm cod on a 3kg rod with a 1000 size reel earlier in the year, it was a long fight and if there were any snags it would have been over quickly and not in my favour. If your going to keep them to eat then it would be fun but as mentioned not good for the fish.

I've got a PE3 rod and 2500 reel that would do the job, but I'd spool it with 35-40lb super thin braid and a 40-60lb soft fluorocarbon leader.

Is probably be inclined to run the 38lb shimano grapler braid that's only PE2 diameter and run 40lb black magic leader.
