  1. You’re stubborn Hamish... Just coz YOU can ride your bike down to fish the Brisbane river... I’m too old and fat to ride my bike down to fish the river just joking mate. i would be keen for a more general winter classic / summer classic kind of scenario. Make species specific targets that open it to as many anglers as possible, land, kayak, boat or dynamite fishos ( @GregOug). Similar to the shark comp, run for a month in June/July and then again in dec/Jan. Definitely photo entry not physical weigh in to keep the vegans happy. just my thoughts.
  2. Is it bad that we used to use spangles about that size as live bait for barra...? looks like a fun morning, nice when a plan comes together.
  3. Second @jon on the crumb. Awesome when fresh. Great in a Thai red curry as well, that’s a staple on all my Moreton trips. Looks like a great little spot you’ve got there - hard to get a land based spot to yourself a lot of the time when the tailor are on.
  4. Can’t help with the reefs as I only ever fished land based. Proper sand 4x4 tracks up there. If it has been dry for a while and lots of traffic (school hols and 2 x long weekends) the tracks can be a real challenge. Low pressures and a bit of momentum and you should be ok. There’s great fishing off the rocky headlands around there (including the actual five rocks), you’ll get you usual bread and butter stuff but also occasional fingermark, cod, queenies, trevally and mackerel if you are lucky. At a guess I’d suggest trolling wide of the headlands for mackerel and other speedsters, I am confident the structure won’t stop at the waters edge. I’m sure if you stop in at Barra Jack’s in rockhampton and make a few purchases they will have some better advice for you too.
  5. Awesome news ray. Only pain in the nostrils from the guano now!
  6. Thanks @snap1946 - beat me to it! Technically a bar faced weever but common local name is rock whiting based on them have a similar taste to whiting and generally bring found in the presence of rocky/reefy areas. Used to catch heaps of them in crab pots around mud island. IMO not as good as whiting to eat and far more bones to fillet around. Certainly would if i was hungry. Made reasonable flesh bait though.
  7. Not difficult to scratch together a few fish off Fraser’s reef. Just be aware that the best spot can only be accessed about 2hrs either side of low tide. You can be out there over a high tide but not get on and off.
  8. Agree with everything @ellicat said. Easy to get undersized stuff around the reefy/rubble edges of green and near Hybers light. Occasional good fish in amongst it but should be plenty of action to keep the young fella entertained.
  9. According to my bible (grants guide) the sombre sweetlips, also known as sooty blubber lips have 11-12 strong dorsal spines whereas the brown sweetlips have 14. This appears to match to your photo. The photos in grants guide show quite different shaped fish in general as well.
  10. Plenty of variety off the rock walls at the mouth of the river too. Bream, trevally dart, tailor, occasional kingfish etc. definitely mulloway along the walls too. I have hooked and lost a couple but never landed one. the parreara channel on the way into town offers good banks for flicking for flathead around low tide. North of yamba a bit is woody head, Fraser’s reef and a few other rocky headlands that are well worth a look if wind/swell allows.
  11. is the knew knee putting them off do you think?? this is akin to an @ellicat and I session result!
  12. brown sweetlips, also known as a brown morwong or brown blubber lips. referred to as a blubber-lip bream locally in central qld. not the most common capture but they show up from time to time around the southern bay/jumpinpin as @Old Scaley would know. they are OK eating as long as you bleed them and get them straight on ice but will not compare to whiting, flathead etc, much stronger flavour. They actually grow to nearly three times the size of yours @Kat, up to about 14-15kg. Often targetted by spearos chasing jacks etc around snags in estuaries. Both of the ones I have caught and @Old Scaley's one all came on yabbies and whiting gear as well! and quick but satisfying... that's @ellicat's moto...
  13. Wasn’t suggesting any illegality... just out and out cheating coz I can only use 4!
  14. I have a similar problem with my wee one - I cannot shell prawns or crabs fast enough! great hauls of crabs there mate, although using that many pots must be classed as cheating surely...
  15. Look out bass... he’s back...
  16. i'd suggest your weird runs and non-catches could be pike eels. They are great at grabbing a bait, doing a weird run and missing the hook. they are also very active in dirty water. shame about the results but good on you for having a go despite the dirty water. re ski lice - this is the unfortunate thing about using shared facilities... it means that even undesirables can legally use them. also - i'd be stoked with that gudgeon... it would be a PB for me and i would take that as a positive for an otherwise quiet trip. pearl perch on the reefs fight fairly poorly as well and i will never ever hold that against them!
  17. I don't think there is a lot of opions available up that way mate. I'm sure there would be a population of fish in the coomera river, however, not sure what this would look like after the major flooding there a couple of weeks back. I know you don't want to hear this... it may not be the best fishing type holiday...
  18. Sorry to hear @kmcrosby78. To the bloke that sold it to you - I hope your chickens turn into emus and kick your front door down ya so-and-so...
  19. How dare you jump on a forum and sprout out theories that you haven’t even tested... what do you think this is... politics??? all looks perfectly normal to me @Hweebe if you don’t get covered in grease when hooking the boat up you haven’t overgreased. But as @Angry51 said, a little bit regularly is the go as opposed to a lot once.

    NRL 2021

Ok... consensus seems to be that manly aren’t as bad as the broncos were last year... So what about the cowboys??? That was another pathetic display last night, genuinely concerned that another qld team is on track for the spoon.
  21. Heard a great one today... mates Mrs and kids replaced his cereal with dog food.
  22. You are a game man kelvin... and what a waste of tomato sauce!

    NRL 2021

Here’s a question... are 2021 manly as bad, or potentially even worse than 2020 broncos?

Keep doing it mate, means that those of us who tip with our heads not our hearts have someone we can beat. how could you seriously tip Brisbane to beat the storm... in MELBOURNE...
  25. Soooo... the big question for those in greater Brisbane - will we be allowed out to play for Easter? it appears the ‘rona god and the weather god have teamed up against us humble fishermen. IF we are allowed out... the Easter forecast looks about as average as it could be. 20kn plus all weekend, large swell, squalls, showers, storms and a possible east coast low to finish on Monday! You rippa! Crack out the wetsuit and kite surfing gear! one positive - dan Murphy’s is deemed “essential” during lockdowns.
