Pectoral Fin Removal

Hi there, just wondering if anyone would have more info on the removal of pectoral fins on reef fish. Looked for information on it, but they dont really specify what species of fish etc.

Why do you need to remove the fin?

to prevent it being sold on the black market by ameture fishos reef fin fish and spanish mackerel must have the side fin removed

yep, check the list in the guide, the reef fish are listed seperately, come first under the tidal section on page 2.

- a few fish you catch in estuaries qualify as well, Cod being the one that catches most.

Its a stupid rule, I wonder how many fish with only one fin there are swimming around because of upgrades?

So if I get pulled up in the pine with a cod in the esky and it has it's fins intact am I risking getting finned?

That is correct. Probably more than just risk as well They had a report I think last year saying they were going to be coming down on this stuff a bit more harshly

they fine $150 per fish without the fin lopped, the cod have a strong fin to takes some cutting.

once again it's the bad few apples doing the wrong thing by selling fish without a license to do so if this rule stops that its a good thing to stop those few who would keep more than their share and hurts the professionals doing their job

youd prob be rite in the rivers etc, its the boats coming in that have bagged out that they would be hitting up, def lop the fins on your spannish tho

Mackeral are not on the list as far as I can see. Have a look in the link I added above for what is and isn't in the list.

spanish mackerel have been on the list for the last 5 yrs for fin removal

just had a look at the dpi web site under 'skin, fillet and fin removal' in the rec fishing rules section and it states you must not posses a dead coral reef fin fish unless 1 side fin is removed and the last dot point at the bottom of page is the same for spanish mackerel so upgrading is ok on reef fish if you have the tank to keep them alive

Well - not there on the list above! All Mackeral are listed under "other fish"

Wouldn't be the first time their glossy mags had a mistake in them. Wonder how you would go in court waving it in front of the judge? Probably got some small print in there somewhere like the greenzones books, where they say the provided marks are a generalisation only, and you must refer to the actual legislation..

i've seen fisheries target this at sea as well as at the ramps just don't forget to fin your fish otherwise it gets expensive

thanks for the info tugger, i just wasnt aware of exactly what reef species they were targeting and referring to, not that ill ever be lucky enough to catch a spanish mackeral..
