got it sorted, a mate also recommended steve. took him well close to an hour. we speculated that poor preparation prior to insertion of the bolt (i.e. duralac or anti-seize) lead to the issue. went through around 4-5 burrs and suspected that there was other hardened pieces in there (since he had already got the snapped drill bit out).

$160 later have now got a timesert in there and it should never happen again.

cheers for all the help and thanks to bommie and lance for offering tools, etc.

nice ,sometimes its just easier to let the specialist handle it ,found that with ally heads/cast blocks and broken bolts .

Pleased to hear Steve was able to sort youy out - not that i expected any other outcome. He has been fixing my boats and cars for the last 36 years. Unfortunately he has been outfishing me for that long too!! lol

i always hate it when this sort of thing happens and you cant use the conventional methods. one thing i did last time, which worked and may for you is to drill and tap the deepest, largest diameter left handed thread (assuming the bolt youare trying to remove is right handed thread). once youhave drilled and tapped, fit a bolt into the hole, with lock tight and let it set for say 10 hours or so.

once you have done this you can put a socket, or spanner or what ever on the bolt you now have in, and continue to try and tighten the bolt you have inserted, becuase this is left handed it will be trying to undo the broken stud. and becasue you have locktite in the hole it wont simply be overtightening and stripping the tapped thread, the lock tight should hold out for you to have a good enough crack.

oops , just realised it has been sorted, oh well keep this method in mind as well for anyone else. its good if the broken studs are large enough

HAHA Mike, actually I got Steve's contact through an old friend. You are right though he does good work. Thanks either way.

Greg are we still talking about bolts?

Steve has been my best mate for over 35 years so i reckon i can pass judgement on him by now. I just wish he didnt always seem to catch the biggest fish every time we go out. He is unbleiavbly good with a bait rod but i leave him for dead with lures...so we usually bait fish if we are out together!!

I should have hit him up for some fishing tips as well :P , but he was pretty well occupied with the bolt and I thought best leave him to it.
