would that be as in where the handle goes into the body of the reel?

Either way, it was probably there to help keep water out of the reel. It's probably too late now, but next time, do what you can to clean it and then oil it (if you hadn't already done that). Removing parts from a reel is generally only going to weaken it somewhere.

my symetre was like that aftr i cleaned it , it was stiff to wind in and i thought it was shot . forgot it was stiff and grabbed it and went off flicking plastics and kept casting and snagged a 54cm flattie that took the drag for a decent run and it seemed to fix it ??? im guessing something in the gears were out of whack after the clean and the drag running flat out aligned it back up

have not had an issue since
