A fisherman has been lucky to escape alive after he hooked a massive 104kg tuna which capsized his boat off the coast of Hawaii.

Anthony Wichman, 54, was hauling the monster tuna on deck when his 13-foot boat tipped over off the island of Kauai on July 20, Hawaii News Now reports.

Mr Wichman then became tangled in fishing line and was dragged underwater.

He managed to free himself and scramble onto the boat's hull where he called his wife for help.

Mr Wichman's wife alerted authorities and a US Coast Guard helicopter crew was sent to rescue him.

Amazingly, Mr Wichman managed to hold onto the tuna throughout the ordeal.

His rescuers took a photo of him standing proudly next to his catch, which matches him in size.

Local police spokeswoman, lieutenant Jessica Mickelson, said they found the fisherman by tracing his mobile phone.

"At the end of the day, we couldn't have asked for a better rescue," Lieutenant Mickelson said.

"Mr Wichman was delivered safely to shore with minimal injuries and he and his friends will have quite the indisputable fish tale to tell."
