Reduced speed limits will be in force on the NoosaRiver for the Christmas holidays.

Maritime Safety Queensland area manager Peter Kleinig said the annual speed reductions to six-knots would be enforced.

"Queensland Water Police and Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol officers may issue on-the-spot fines of $235 for inconsiderate boaties who choose to speed," Mr Kleinig said.

The six-knot limit applies to areas of Noosa Inlet and Noosa Sound from the T Boats Jetty on Gympie Tce to the mouth of the NoosaRiver.

Mr Kleinig said the seasonal speed limit would apply to sections of the NoosaRiver system from December 1 until January 31.

"Maritime Safety Queensland will replace existing speed signs with six knots speed signs to alert boaties to these changes," Mr Kleinig said.

"It is a boat operator's responsibility to be fully aware of speed limits that apply throughout the year.

"As well as obeying speed limits, boaties should also keep a lookout for the distinctive yellow buoys.

"These clearly mark the NoosaRiver commercial personal watercraft area which is used by hire-and- drive personal watercraft during the daytime."

A similar area set up on the MaroochyRiver is also marked out with yellow buoys.
