Hi guys after reading through previous threads and speaking to people on here, I have decided to give pumicestone passage a go on Saturday morning. Will be targeting flatties on soft plastics. Any tips, spots will be appreciated.

Cheers

Anywhere you can wade the flats. Google earth and get onto that website I suggested (Landangler). Look for his Bribie posts. He fishes alot around White Patch etc. Another thing, if you have a vehicle get yourself a yak. (Cheap second hand will do) and fish the weeds beds and drop offs in the Passage. Plenty of info on line (this forum as well as others. Also youtube)

Heaps of good fish about if you explore enough ;)fh6.thumb.jpg.35315cd5af84944c49fc4308a1b3c371.jpg1f8.jpg.81efcd28a31832d474657333b7872dd1.jpg

Thanks fishaman,

some nice fish there!

what plastics and jig would you suggest?

First up use a light outfit. I use a 7ft 6in 1-4kg rod and a 1000 reel. Load it up with 6lb braid (I use Nanofil as it casts a mile.) I use about 1-2 meters of 8lb flourocarbon trace. If you are around rocks maybe got to 12lb. Learnt to tie an FG knot for your leader (I use the method in the youtube link below)

If I am fishing in water up to 2M deep I use a 1/8th Oz jighead. If deeper than 2-3 meters I may go up to 1/4oz but try to stay with 1/8th oz. Trust me, go light to get the bite. I have landed some good fish on 6lb line (92cm flatty, 90cm jew) and my mate has landed a 97cm thready. Set your drag right, let 'em run, keep constant pressure on them and you'll land them. Rarely busted off.

As far as plastics go. You cant go past a curl tail grub. I have had most success using gulp 4inch minnow grub in green prawn. Also love the 3inch in Camo or pepper prawn

Any curl tail grub will do to be honest though. Also use a scent of some sort (like S factor etc)

Good luck and tight lines!!

Thanks fishaman.. heaps of info there definitely have the light gear already, and have the bubblegum curl tail grub.. was told by a guy at BCF to go heavy with the jig head, and didn't have any luck on it.

Thanks for the info, much appreciated!

Thats pretty good advice for a complete beginner cos it ensures the plastic is on the bottom. But when you're a bit more experienced and know when your lure is touching the bottom then lighter is defs the way to go.

hit up the passage Saturday morning and had a pretty good session. Got a few pike early in the morning, was able to get a couple of nice flathead at the mouth of the ningi river. First was about 45cms and the second was about 40cm. Both on soft plastics about 50 meters offshore on a sand bank. Will definitely be hitting this spot up again. Cheers to everyone for the tips.

Good stuff. Keep at it and you'll have a ball exploring new places. Wont be long and you will be able to recognise good spots from experience and it wont be long after that before you start to eye off spots just out of casting distance and you invest in a kayak hahahaaaa (well that's the way it progressed for me.)

My mate and I went out for a fish Sunday morning and landed about 15 flattys. Best went 70cms (she went back after a quick pic) and we took home a nice feed of 45cm-52cm fish.

Nnice feed there! Definitely had a good time walking up and down the passage and finding some nice fish. I do have a kayak, it's in Melbourne, was unable to bring it up. A kayak/boat is a must in port Phillip bay to get out amongst the snapper, land based fishing up here is much better than down south, and happy to search land based spots up here for the time being.

I love fishing the bribie area and the creek and canals that run off from the passage. There are some really good spots if your willing to put the time in that is easily accessible landbased or a short paddle in a kayak.  Its obviously less time consuming having a boat to scout out new areas

There is a spot i like to fish behind sandstone point hotel. I walk along the back of there on a low tide and walk right out to the green markers. I just walk the little sand bank there flicking plastics for flatties. Last year you could get a dozen flatties in a session. Only drama is you dont get much time to fish it and if the tide somes up too far before you head back you will have to swim

Yeah I was intending to fish there on Saturday but found it a bit too windy, so headed down the passage for a bit of shelter. High tide is 11am Saturday, do you think it would still be worth while fishing the run out during the day?

Back up to the passage today.. got a few nice flatties around white patch, the biggest 50cm and a very long, long Tom. Run into quite a few sting rays in the shallows, one very big one followed me in with the long Tom. A very healthy waterway up there.
