Mulloway No Take?

Hi all,

I saw a notice stating Black Jew were a no take for the rest of this year because the pros have already caught the limit imposed! It appears these are a different fish to your normal Mulloway or Jewfish but I’m afraid I’m having difficulty noticing the supposed differences.

cheers

Hi GregOug

Yes, I read this on Bush 'n' Beach fishing a while ago. Black jew aren't found down here, they are only found up North more. Any jew you catch down here is a mulloway. It is a shame they were hit so hard, but good everyone is taking action to make sure there is a sustainable industry.

Cheers Hamish 🙂

Like Hamish said, they're a northern species.

From https://www.daf.qld.gov.au/fish-identification-information/fish-species-guide/fish-species-id-info/profile?fish-id=black-jewfish

Description
  • three to five dark bars and many small black spots (about size of pupil) on the upper half of the body
  • top of the head and caudal fin has many small black spots (about size of pupil)
  • pectoral, pelvic and anal fins and lower part of caudal fin are black
  • in larger fish the bars and spots are obscure or absent
Frequent Misidentification

Mulloway
Silver jewfish

Features that distinguish black jewfish from mulloway:
• flanks have irregular vertical blotches/bands, which are more prevalent in juveniles
• there is no black spot at the base of the pectoral fin

Hi GregOug

Yes, it'd be a disaster if you caught a legal jewie and put it back thinking it was a black jew when you're fishing for a feed.

To be honest, from what I have seen on fishing shows black jew suffer from baroutrauma, so even though people can't target them, if you caught one as by catch it might not release well.

Cheers Hamish 🙂
