Question of price

Quick question (well maybe not).

Ive finally convinced the Mrs that the family needs a boat :)

This is what I think we need

12-15 foot tinny (I need to seat 2 adults and 2 midgets on the odd occasion)

20-25 HP motor

Safety gear (life jackets etc)

Trailer (and straps etc)

Anchor

On road costs (duh)

This is what I think I also want

Bimini (is that right)

Flooring

Nav lights

Bilge Pump

What I want is a boat capable of going out into the bay (not ocean side). SO down to the pin around the islands etc.

Is what I described above ok for that purpose. If so can anyone throw a price range around it.

Ive checked over the web a bit and prices (when they are online) range quite a bit and to be honest I dont know what to believe. I dont really want to go too cheap which to me screams cheap now expensive fix ups soon.

Any advice welcome (no i cant get a Kayak because I need to seat 4 so dont go there).

Thanks in advance for any ideas

C

P.S. Im checking out the Westside marine closing down Auction on Thursday so any tips before then would be appreciated

Look for high sides, and ability to take a long shaft motor. Short shaft motors on small boats make for a wet bum when facing down wind! (wave splash coming in over back).

Your probably looking for a minimum of 4m boat to seat 4 legally / in comfort.

Bimini, get one easy to drop down, just about impossible to fish out from under one with more than 1 or 2 fishing.

Bilge pump will mean a sizeable battery, (LED Nav lights you could get away with a tiny battery only), maybe a charging circuit in the motor to match.

if the boat is 4.8m and over - kids wont have to wear life jackets constantly whilst in the boat. (Otherwise they have to be wearing a life jacket unless the boat is anchored or moored)

Cant see myself convincing the mrs of anything longer than about 4-4.2

Shes also a safety freak so they will have life jackets anyway. When we go on the barge to the islands she doesnt even like them getting out of car.

Happy to drop the bilge pump. Got a small one anyway - hes 4. :)

id buy a 5metre tinny on the grounds of safety with younguns the sides are taller so they cant fall out and also keep them wearing a comfy pfd2 this should get you merrily through anything in the bay without whinging or worry the quintrex millenium hulls and the stacer hulls with the double flare will give a substantially better ride over the older style tinny hulls premium price though a 4 sroke is nice to no coughing over smokey old 2stroke and better trolling and economy :)

If Fibreglass check the floor and under the floor aswell as the transom for any rot, flexing or warping. Generally if it has any of those problems then i would walk away. Also get a marine mechanic to check the motor and do a compression test, If its alluminium then dont be afraid of a bit of corrosion most olden tinnie's have a bit. But too much is no good, Check the welds for cracking and thats about it.

PS. DONT SKIMP ON THE TRAILER, The trailer should be the most important part, make sure its in good condition with working lights and the springs and axel are in good condition and also check the bearings.
