short bite leaders

Anyone ever play around with a much lighter leader than you would normally use for a rodlength or so, with a short (30-40cm tops) bite leader attached to it of appropriate strength?

not sure if it would make a huge difference in terms of getting more bites compared to just running the heavier leader straight through, so if anyone has played around with something like this, please let me know!

Its a fairly common practise in fly fishing so I can't see why it wouldn't have an application in other forms.

I have been tempted to try it when fishing for larger flatties, but as yet haven't.

i normaly start with realy lite leader but when igo up to 20lb plus leader i only ever use like a 40cm leader cause if you go much longer than that i think it doesnt cast as well

Yeah I've done it a couple of times. Only because heavier leader gets caught in the guides of my lighter rods. I've only added maybe 15-20cm to the tip.

yeah i normally use a rodlength of 20lb straight through to the lure (when chasing bigger fish) , has been sketchy at times though and sketchy isn't what you want when you're throwing $30 jackalls around, so i'm wondering if its worth running a short section of 40lb at the end of my 20lb, or whether its better to just run 40lb straight through lol

yeah the only thing is joining mono to mono where i would just put a shot leader tied to my braid just anougth to cast easily 30 to 40 cm

worried about spooking fish though, i usually run a minimum of one rod length of fluro cause braid is pretty visible underwater

not so much an issue with threadfin as they are pretty blind but more worried about jewies etc!

when chase in jews you should not need to go up to a 40lb leader ive landed a few around that area where you were fishing yesterday i normaly use 12 lb leader for snapper jews threadys and normaly dont have an issue

yeah when chasing the big flatties i usually have my rod length or so of 8lb then 40ish cm of 20lb saves me lures and fish:) but others have said i do it so I dont run it all the way coz the joining knot hit the guides and sometimes its goodbye lure when casting

i have used it before because mainly connecting 40lb leader to 4lb braid doesn't really work out haha, but i caught plenty of fish on it though, will definetly use it again.
