Prawn Run - Put me straight please

I was wondering if anyone can put my thoughts straight.

Do the prawns start running after the rain?

I think they do a monthly run around the moon, is this true for the Brissy River?

I think they are more active in summer but what about June July August?

Do they live in the river all year round?

Do they start life in the river then move out to sea?

Ive caught plenty in the brisbane river in winter, its a case of throwing your net in the shallow areas, you will get plenty Big ones too. Its a hit and miss thing catching prawns in the river. Oxley creek is a personal fav. spot.

Gotta love Brisbane river prawns good tucker :P

Mate we have been getting prawns all the way through.

As Dave said its hit and miss.

I have not noticed any real affect due to Season.

Sometimes you hit a patch and sometimes you dont.

Id have to say tyhe lower reaches are where we have got better prawns.

Check the photo gallery there is one photo with a huuuuge bucket of huuuuge prawns.

But newstead pontoon has like 10 cast netters at any one time which can suck.

Im not sure about the rain. One thing the rain does tend to do is bring more fish into the river lookign for whats getting washed down. If whats getting washed down is prawns, well then hey, looks like your in luck!

Angus.

When I was a young fella, I used to go down to my Aunts place at Merimbula (NSW / VIc border area) the old timers used to wade in with hand nets to catch prawns. Very successfull it was (Like big landing nets). Around full moon was the only time they bothered.

It was very hush hush, no one allowed to talk loud or splash, coz they reckoned it would break up the schools.
