gday guys chasing some herring for fishing around the goldy and have found a few spots

first of all what can i burley them up with to school them up

do they keep well in makeship bait tank, bucket & airator

herring dont keep very well full stop.

Usually you find they die as your getting them outa the cast net.

They are not very hardy at all.

ITs the poddy mullet you will have more success with keeping alive.

u will find that the ehrring choke on their own scales.

i find throwing some bread works well to keep them in the area ive gone to random spot thrown some bread out waited about a minute then casted and got enough bait for 3 trips. they all died before i could get them out of the castnet which sucks.. usually if i have maybe 5 max with my aerator they'll keep for a couple hours but their own scales kill them

best way to keep them alive is use a drawstring net so they dont get caught in pockets, recycle the water very frequently as they are sensitive to their scales as said above and stress hormones, and hook them through the eye socket, without piercing the eye itself

it can be done but its alot of effort

as above also pick out any that look like they are going to cark it.

adding 3 drops of clove oil per litre will slow them down and they will last a lot longer maintain the dose with water changes or add as required if in a recirculating livetank.

I have added a 2nd overflow from my bait tank so i can circulate more water frequently.

This has helped keep them alive far longer.

My pump is constantly running when i have herring in the tank.

And i second that hook through the front of the eyes.

herring r a great live bait lots of fish have them on their menu handle them carefully and as said above change water often i hook them threw the back on small tides but if there is a strong run in the tide its threw the head
