i find throwing some bread works well to keep them in the area :) ive gone to random spot thrown some bread out waited about a minute then casted and got enough bait for 3 trips. they all died before i could get them out of the castnet which sucks.. usually if i have maybe 5 max with my aerator they'll keep for a couple hours but their own scales kill them

best way to keep them alive is use a drawstring net so they dont get caught in pockets, recycle the water very frequently as they are sensitive to their scales as said above and stress hormones, and hook them through the eye socket, without piercing the eye itself

it can be done but its alot of effort

as above also pick out any that look like they are going to cark it.

adding 3 drops of clove oil per litre will slow them down and they will last a lot longer maintain the dose with water changes or add as required if in a recirculating livetank.
