Hey guys,

Caught a strange one this afternoon at Nudgee.... Anyone know what it is? Was about 15-20cm and fought rather well for it's size.

Crescent Perch, pretty common. Similar to Trumpeter's.

hmmmm hate those things.....love to take live yabbies meant for salmon and difficult to release as they generally swallow it and are bloody spikey all over

As I said, it's a first for me, but are they any good eating? They look a bit nasty, but that doesn't mean much when ppl eat those leatherjakets. hahaha

And are there a legal size for them?

Hahaha mate I have never seen one remotely close to a size worth eating!

Leather Jackets are great eating. But remember there are a lot of differnet types. The one thrown up on here for ID recently was a very small fleshless looking thing.

Down south moreso there are a few species far meatier and worth the trouble to skin.

Yeah can't say I've ever tried the flesh of them. Never caught one worth keeping. I have heard they're good, but damn they aren't pretty.... Actually, I could say that about a few of my ex partners too. :laugh:

Watch out they have spikes and while they are not as bad as bullrouts they will still make you feel uncomfortable for 15 minutes or so.

Fan bellied leather jackets are a fine table fish.

Don't buy the leather jackets from Woolworths with the yellow fins :pinch: :X :blush: , I bought 2 and still have one in the fridge, I keep meaning to throw it out on garbage night.

I have the exact same photo on my phone - no one has been able to tell me with any confidence. I did see a pic of a banded trumpter - thats as close as i'v got?

Crescent Grunter, (Terapon jarbua) - Have a look on the australian museum websight and type this in, there is a pic the same as yours that says it was caught at nudgee!

we called them Target fish up north, used to get schools of them going up a down beaches annoying the whiting fishermen
