So I take it going by Luc's comment they are still trying to rear them in hatcheries.

I'll leave the population that I may know of alone, partly because it is a hell of a long hike in by foot and partly because it only takes one other person to see you go in with rod in hand and that's the end of it.

The research station at Bribie has brood stock from most populations.

They can breed them at will but at this stage, for some reason once the fry absorb the yolk, they don't start feeding hence starve & die soon after.

Fisheries is trying to work out if they haven't hit on the right food or are not providing the right trigger to get then to start feeding. I believe that some of the brood stock fish are over 3KG!!

It will be great when they solve the feeding problem. We'll be able to restock areas where they've disappeared, another possible species for stocking not to mention getting little ones for the aquarium trade. Beautiful fish in fish tanks.
