How old is you Bream

The QLD fisheries have recently released a report on Yellow Fin Bream regarding length and age.

The most interesting part is this graph I think

For example a 33-34cm bream could vary in age quite widely from 5-14yrs in age.

Anyway here's the link to the full Bream report if you are keen for a read

Similar reports on other species are here

Apologies for the title. It should have read "How old is your Bream?"

I think a lot of past quoted figures have been from studies on southern fish which with the colder water came slower growth rates.

There is always going to be a huge variation in length to age with open water fish always longer than impoundment type inhabitants that don't have to swim against tides.

Yeah good point Waldo. I had watched a few Micah Adams videos where he is pulling bream out at around the 35cm range and saying they would be 25 years old. Guess that would reflect the colder Victorian climate.

I also remember when I was about 15 on our family property at Surat we had some people from QLD Uni camped in the shearer's quarters trying to quantify the local kangaroo population. Dad got their report saying we had next to zero 'roos residing on our place and the surrounding properties. I shot 60 odd that night from memory for skins (all legal, licensed and tagged).

Sometimes research just needs to be taken with a grain of salt.
