difference between reels

had a good rod/reel offer for a second rod,my question is it has a 4000 shimano sienna reel,i use a 2500 on my sp outfit,would this bigger reel effect my using hard-bodies ,and what do the sizes mean,ive got no bloody idea.

For general estuary luring I wouldn't like to go over a 2500 size reel. You could go bigger if you were just trolling but for ease and comfort the 2500 is a good size. The reel sizes don't really mean much other than where the reel sits in the particular manufacturers size range, it's just a designation and all manufacturers will be different.

More line for deeper water / bigger fish. If your bait fishing wont make a difference, if your casting, its a bit more weight to toss about all day, would NOT use it for bream lures!.

A bigger spool will retrieve more line per turn, therefore faster and harder to keep the pace down if you want a slow lure.

a 4000 would be good for the larger plastics - 5-7inch and somewhere around the 1 ounce sized jigheads and larger hardbodies.

Not really ideal for lighter estuary casting. Give it a few hours non stop casting and your arm will drop off

A 4000 series reel compared to the 2500 will hold more line, it caters for larger breaking strains to be spooled, obviously will weigh a little more but in most cases will also have increased drag pressure i.e. sienna 2500 3kgs drags the 4000 is 6kgs

It will also have a different gear ratio which will affect how much line can be retrieved with each wind of the reel
