chipped/chewed skeg and prop

Well it had to happen sooner or later but my nice, shiny outboard hit a rock bar today.... thank christ we had throttled down to a crawl but all the same it was a bit of a sick feeling seeing the damage but hey its a fishing boat and we need to get into some snaggy/rocky terrain to chase fish i guess~!

questions...

1/ Will those small bites on the skeg make 'that' much difference (if any) and best way to fix if so? (knead it putty type stuff i was thinking?)

I'm currently searching for the best repair option for the blades...they are chipped but not bent at all so if any one has advice or can suggest the best plan please shoot!

ps i'm on a budget otherwise i'd just get a SS prop so a fix is where i'm at..

yeah took the file to it this arvie, looking a lot better. Forgot to mention lost 3 very solid jacks (3 lures as well) and had a beast follow a bream up.... was a frustrating day!

Id take it to the prop guy down at murarrie he tuned mined when it was out of shape for 50. It will probably affect your top speed

My Skeg and prop look worse than that from before I bought it and it still goes alright,

The Skeg will not have a lot of effect but it is important to get the prop fixed. Even a small amount of damage can put the prop out of balance. This can damage the bearing seals and bearings.

i did a similar thing recently, unfortunately mine was at 35km/h but luckily was just a rocky bottom not a rock bar, new alloy props arent too dear, i got a new genuine yamaha prop for my f50 for $145

I have done the same with my Honda 90 and like others have said take a file to it and tune her up. If you are padantic Yammy do sell touch up paint that will make you feel better.

I hit two sand banks on Friday night as they had moved beyond the channel marker and I just clipped them, horrible feeling.

99% popping a Solas SS on her this week. Wanted to from the start just needed the incentive

Fix keep the old one for creek bashing 5 minutes to change. Got a cheap ally prop for creek bashing myself.

you read my mind mate. ordered a new one today and am keeping that potato for exactly as you mentioned.It's a lesson learnt but I'm sure it won't be the last time~~!!

you know the repaired one is often better balanced than a new one. Just aesthetically not as pleaseing

been in consultation with the guys at propellor warehouse and am going with a stainless. good price and suits my needs. the current one is going to get a makeover and sit in the boat as a spare or for me to flip on shallow or new grounds

That sounds good. There are two lines of thought on this. Stainless Steel are strong and more durable, Alloy are less durable but have some give. I make a habit of hitting the prop so I have made the decision to go with alloy. SS does not have the give and all the shock goes through the drive chain.

yeah mate, I know that if you tend to hit a bit SS can be less flexible but apparently the new solas jobs do give and the rubber bushing takes 99% of the impact.

That being said I'm not going to jinx it.

I should have been a tiny bit more cautious in the first place but the tide had bottomed out and exposed a rock bar in half a foot of water. It was dark and we had come across this area before without any issue in the past...We were lucky we weren't going full tilt, THAT wouldn't have been pretty.

that is how they fix them however you need to balance them as well. No point just welding it and doing it by eye, it will not work

$80 will see the old alloy one back to near perfect condition.
