Is it the standard Elite 5 model? or the HDI? or the DSI?

Alot of the settings will come down to environmental conditions as well as transducer positioning.

It will come down to fiddling with the settings until you get the desired effect.

are there any particular issues you are having with the picture? Surface noise or inability to sound the bottom?

No worries, Its definately the HDI. The Elite 5x HDI. Id just start with default settings using the split screen of the sonar and the downscan. Assuming you can already read a conventional sonar fishfinder, this will help you learn the what is structure and what is fish on the downscan. If there is alot of junk showing up you can adjust settings like the gain. Once you are used to this you can overlay the downscan onto the sonar and have it fill the whole screen, which creates a very handy picture of arches for fish and very visible structure on the downscan.

You mention if there's a lot of junk you can adjust settings like the gain. Not sure what you mean by this.

When looking at your sounder, (it will be more noticable on the sonar) there may be lots of spots and things that show up on the screen, more often at the top section of the water column. here is a useful video to learn about changing sensitivity settings on the sounder. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79zb_umbVOs
