queensland Sea snakes in the brizzy river?

Hi all.

Made my third trip to the pontoon bear Brett's Wharf last night. The only catches where 2 strange looking things... I don't really know what they are. Sea snakes perhaps? A bream, and two of those prickley worm kinda things. Oh, and a dude who was waiting for the city cat came over for a look. I ended up giving him a rod for an hour or two and he ended up having a small but decent fight with a stingray. Not a bad night all in all. Saw many hundreds od jellyfish streaming past, too.

is it a conger eel? looks like one to me. or it could be a freshie- i know that they change shape when they're about to go on their long trip to the sargasso.

I'm 99% sure its a common old Pike Eel, but the pic isn't super clear. They make top shark bait:laugh:

pike eels dont seem to be as fat as that and have a longer thiner head, looks like some other kind of eel not sure

mmm pinkey yeah I agree the jaw looks a bit short for a pike buts its hard to be certain with the angle in the pic

Yea i caught one of them eels on the brissie river last week but it bit off my leader once I got it to the surface. It looked pretty similar to the ones in ur pictures. Doesn't have quite as long a head as the pike eels though

hahah yeah it actually does look like a snake in that shot. I'm agreeing now its not a Pike Eel though. I haven't ever seen a conger eel so can't comment on that!

I think its a juvenile pike eel. Everything matches except the shape of the head is slightly differnet. We all know that the shape of a fish's head can alter as they mature.

That would be a ripper size for a little bully

Who said pike eels dont get fat?? Also sea snakes have a flat tail so it's not a sea snake....

The head's totally wrong for a sea-snake. It's far too pointed and narrow at the tip and as well, the eyes are way too large and protruding to be a snake too. And yeap, a sea snake's tail ends in a sudden flatness, not as nice and gradual as eels.

Good think it wasn't a sea-snake, they're pretty venomous! You'd have had a hard time gettin rid of it w/o getting bitten. Best way is if you ain't sure, jus cut off the leader!

even small pike eels have pike-like heads. my money's still on a conger- it's within range of its habitat and looks almost identical.

yeah and stingray i know the big ones are fat but ones that size are quite skinny..
