queensland Wivenhoe Debut

Continued my recent run of exploratory trips to unknown waters today. Decided on Wivenhoe! Nope, I've never fished it before. Haven't really been interested with all the reports of Forktail Catfish in plague proportions! I thought the summertime Forkies at North Pine were bad, but after today...Wivenhoe wins!

 

I trolled around for a bit, but kept hooking the bastards at regular intervals. There wasn't much in the way of structure for me to cast to either, so I wasn't sure how to find some Bass in a sea of vermin. I eventually spotted a huge fallen tree that just had to have a Bass or two hidden underneath.

 

 

Tried a spinnerbait first, and thought I felt a couple of nudges, but no hookups. Clipped on a beetle spin instead for a smaller profile, and got smashed straight away! Not what I was expecting though, a nice little Yella was the result. Apparently he wasn't the only resident. Found two more Yellowbelly as I moved around the tree.

 

 

Trolled a bit more after that for some extra Forkies, and decided to head back towards the launch spot. Managed to sneak one of my lures close enough to another fallen tree while trolling, and it paid off with another Yella. A fat one too! Had a few flicks at this snag as well, and sure enough, there were more yellow fish hiding in the branches.

 

 

Finished the session with 12 Forkies (some were absolute whoppers) and 6 Yellowbelly.

Nice report @basshunter1987. Do you do any Jack fishing or the likes? I reckon you would be all over it with that canoe and setups

Thanks, Sam! I haven't fished salt water for years, I'm too lazy to clean all my gear when I get home. Never need to worry about that in the sweetwater! I'd love to catch a Jack one day though, and maybe I'll consider it soon, since my setup apparently suits it!

This is the report from Friday. I was indeed at work all day yesterday! Hot and sunny week coming up, got any trips planned, Dino?

Planning a trip to caloundra to pick up my new motor that I blew the fuses and control box for power trim. 300 bucks worth the damage and I havnt even used it yet. There will be some red tape going over the black bit on the bottom of the positive cable as soon as I get it home.

Good on you mate for putting in the effort.

I have to admit the catfish stories combined with the size has put me off really giving W a crack as well.

I can't confirm this, but on Wivenhoe apparently if you keep pulling forkies increase your retrieve rate. Bass are happy to chase a speedy retrieve but forkies are a little lazy? Just a rumour?
