Luggage Point Proposed Cruise Dock

Recommended Posts

Thanks for that article Chris. Quite interesting but I don't think it will get built as what happened to the proposed fisherman's Island terminal, gold Coast spit, coolangatta terminal?? I don't know of any construction on these places yet so I'm thinking it's just another idea to get attention. :)

I am trying to picture where this would go. If it is 200 meters from the poo shoot, it is either on the mudflats on the bay side or it would be at the mouth of Boggy Creek. That would mean that the pipeline is going, but would the creek flow under or around the terminal?  Would they need part of the sunken wall?

in any case, it just might be a good thing for land based fishes in the long term because they might build boardwalks or even a fishing platform? Who knows. Would. Probably destroy one of the big breeding grounds for threadfin, at least for a while. But then it might provide lots of structure for snapper, bream, cod and jewies.  Tend to agree with the previous posts that this may never happen or will be a few years off at least.

BP has closed the refinery and is in the process of pulling it down. They still have a tank farm along the brisbane river side for the moment. They still have a 15 year lease on Bulwer Island, but it is all state government land, cant see BP being to upset if the government called in the lease..

So presumably the pipeline will go at some stage then?

The existing cruise terminal is a joke with only the smaller cruise ships able to utilize it,

New terminal probably will not be allowed because there have been woolly mouthed blue eyed grasshoppers reported in the area and the greenies would protest as they were previously thought to be extinct.

Cheers

The new cruise terminal has been given the go ahead, the BP luggage point terminal will remain and the cruise terminal will be constructed just down stream from it . The sunken wall will be removed and a wharf face constructed and dredging to deepen the access surveying has already begun.

My company has been notified of all the changes to the port as it is a port service provider the current situation is not practical with the bigger cruise ships not able to get under the bridge to the current cruise terminal. The other wharf now utilised for the bigger ships is the grain terminal where passengers get to walk through the industrial site.

The new terminal on the north shore at the mouth of the river will be a specialised cruise terminal that will give quick access to the airport. Brisbane has seen a huge increase in visits from cruise ships in recent years and more are earmarked to come so their is a huge need for this project.

well there you go. Will be very interesting to see how this all pans out. Im sure a few boaties will be against this, but you cant stand in the way of progress like this.

Thanks for that info @tugger. So this will be the cruise ship terminal going ahead...

But I guess this may be a good thing with the new terminal as what @Old Scaley mentioned they might build a boardwalk and fishing platforms (hopefully) which will provide plenty of structure for bream, snapper, cod, etc. giving more chances to landbased fishos while destroying the threadfin breeding ground which isn't a good thing but maybe the threadfin will be pushed out of the Brisbane river and into the nearby estuary systems i.e. pine, Caboolture, logan, pumicestone and provide chances for anglers fishing on those systems to target threadfin and jew, who knows time will tell I guess.

Not good news for the threadfin. They are copping enough pressure from the pro's in the river as it is, but hopefully they bounce back.

They are already through those systems @curranboy99, just not as prevalent as the Brisbane River is or should I say 'was'.

Let's just hope the authorities are doing the sums to avoid a depletion of threadfin in the river which would be a huge shame.

The threadfin will survive the wharf construction i guess people don't  realise the mouth of the river has all been altered before nothing is natural all the rock walls aĺl the dredging. There is constant dredging to keep the bp terminal deep the dredge was there all this week working as well as all the other wharfs.

They have survived a century of river changes whether it was blasting of the rock bars to allow shipping through or wharf construction or a century or more of dredging. The mouth of the river before we altered it was a big shallow delta that most of our runabouts couldn't  get through at low tide with a large rock bar just opposite the tug base now it's  17 meters deep up to the rocks cutting that needs constant dredging.

The rock walls were all put in place by man not by some natural process fisherman island was a little mangrove island a fraction the size it is today so now I'm guessing you get my point don't  worry about the threadfin they will adapt

Hahaha classic. You're just interested in their spawning patterns and don't actually want to fish for them right?

Of course ......... :) Trust me, if my dismal fishing strike rate put the species on the brink of extinction they're in a world of trouble ... ;)

Well said Tugger.

John Petrie (who runs the site with me) has long family ties to Brisbane, in fact Andrew Petrie, his great great something grandfather was the first Governor. Where do I go with this? Anyway a lot of their old diaries etc talk about the Brisbane River before dredging, back when boats would have to stop at Dunwich and smaller craft would ferry cargo etc across the bay.

The mouth of the river back then was very different and at certain tides you could actually walk across the sandbanks to the other side. Southbank reach was literally lily pads and fresh water etc. Would have been amazing to see!

Anyway my point is I would say if they can survive that they can survive more development.
