Moreton Bay Oyster Reef Project. When Does It Start?

As I have been pushing for support for the Moreton Bay Oyster reef project lately a few people have asked "when does it start". The answer is "it has".

Courtesy of the Port Of Brisbane we now have a large block of land on the reclaimed land at the river mouth for our shell drying. Pictured below is yet another ute load of oyster shell (courtesy of oyster wholesalers across Brisbane) dropped to the site today for drying.

Why are we drying oyster shell? To make the bio blocks we need to repopulate the bay oyster shell is the best medium. The bio chemical signature the shell emits is the most attractive surface for oyster spat (planktonic sized juvenile oysters) to take purchase. This is after all how an oyster reef literally grows with new oysters attaching as old ones die creating complex habitats in the bay.

So please support this project. An easy start is entering the Wynnum Fishing Classic or by simply buying a raffle ticket (or 2). You are not supporting a pipe dream but a project already off the ground. Your support will dramatically improve the scale in which we can operate and make a very tangible difference.

Check out our website to learn more about the project or purchase said entries or raffle tickets. 6 weeks to the competition!

Nice post angus. I spoke to PFD today and they have agreed to give us their shell. This pretty much doubles the amount we are getting... my poor ute 🙂

Mate sort of thing alone exacerbates our need for support. It has fast outgrown something a couple of blokes can do on a Sunday with their own resources.

We need a flat tray truck and at least a full time coordinator stat!

If we can get it out there how much rec fishers and environmentalists all stand to beenfit immensily hopefully the support will come.
