Lake Kurwongbah Comes of age.

The first fish release happened this week with 10 000 Bass fingerlings finding a new home for themselves. A lot hard work to get to this point and still alot to go. A big thanks to Angus and the members who have been supporting us and will hopefully continue into the future.

Hopefully we will add another 130 - 150 000 fish over the rest of the stocking season, along with the almighty bass, there will be yella's, cod, 'toga and gar introduced this year. All we have to do is keep ripping the dam Tilapia out to give them a fighting chance. The official PRFMA dog. She had to see it all.( She was taken off lead for photographic purposes as dogs have to be on leash )

I felt that it was a very good morning and thanks to the PRFMA members who have been working on this for the last 5 years.

I just hope in the future anglers who enjoy the fruits of their labor respect and thank them for their dedication.

If you would like to assist it only costs $20 per annum for membership.

Meetings are held on the second wednesday of each month at 7.30 at the water treatment works at NPD. Contact number is 0417742023.

Visitors are welcome.

Cheers

OK guys, what bait is best when chasing those Tilapia?

And rigs? Running sinker to the hook or to a swivel and then a trace...or maybe under a float? Bream/Bass gear?

Are lures worth a shot at all, if so what kind are proven performers.

Once caught, what is the method of disposal they want us to use if we go when the comp is not on?

If you are going to kids comp they take the fish off you and dispose.

They will be selling african night crawlers for bait.

Cheers

If we were to go tommorrow (or anytime the comp is NOT on) what do we do with the tillies?

Bury above the high water mark?

Best rig we have found is no.6 hook, with up to 45cm leader and a sliding small sinker running to a swivel. Worms are as good a bait as anything. I've not tried it yet but apparently a float rig at the right depth will do the trick. When they get on the bite they will take small soft plastics. Good fun on light gear, as they grow into the mid 40's.

As the water level has just jumped from 20% to 31%, they will be schooloing up for another breeding run, they can breed up to 4 times a year. Late last week I spotted a school boiling along a bank and it looked similar to something you would see in the salt.

As for disposal, at managed events disposal facilities are provided. The council empties the rubbish bins on Monday mornings so Sat/Sun probably wouldnt hurt. Use your best judgement at this stage for disposal, remember they are mouth brooders and their young can survive for long periods out of water in the parents fish mouth. Obviously we don't want to offend anyone by littering the park banks with dead fish, maybe take a look at the bush area at either end of the park for careful disposal.
