Hobbie Kayak vs tinnie

Jordan

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

ive just saved up a good sum of money to buy my dream car (hotted up supra :woohoo: ) but now the time has come to buy, my boss has advised very strongly against it if i want to keep my job, and insurance is 2.5k per year :(. it seems like i am going to have to leave this dream of mine behind but now that i have some money i am considering either a boat just like the one rumrunner has for sale, or one of those hobbie kayaks with the peddles. unfortunatley the car i have at the moment is a 1.5 litre rice burner lancer, so would have huge difficulties towing a boat, but with a kayak (which costs close to that of a decent boat!!) i wouldnt be able to reach the reefs over at mud and moreton or creep ofshore every now and again.

what do you guys think? and what is the cheapest i could pick up one of those hobbies for?

By the time you set up a hobie you'd be looking at $3k including sounder, scotty rod holders, GPS and all the little luxuries. I'd go a revo (TerryH) or adventure (PCsolutionman) for offshore work. $2300 standard plus $700 to fit it out.

so are revo's and adventure's both hobbies fitted with the foot paddles? is this as cheap as they come even if they were second hand?

They come stocko with the peddles mate. TerryH's is awesome it will be porn once he pimps it out.

I reckon you'd struggle to find one 2nd hand.

I have the outfitter wich is the tandem.

The best thing I can see about a yak,

Don't have to have a specific car to tow it

Don't have to service a motor or ongoing costs like fuel, rego, insurance. To fit out a yak maybe a few hundred but to fit out a boat will be alot more.

B ring

O ut

A nother

T housand

Easier to wash and look after, used to take a 1/2 hr to prep and the same to clean the boat each time you go out.

Alot quicker to set up which means more time fishing

Alot more fresh water options as most lakes are electric only

BUT..

Not as comfy or as much space

not as fast

takes longer to get somwhere and you have paddle / peddle to get there

Can't take someone else.

After selling my boat a peddle power hobie looks more and more tempting, I'll see what happens for christmas this year.;)

haha well put heath...

good to see you back polyphonic, that was well laid out. i would really like to have the boat so i can take out people, but i would probably have to get a different car like a commodore or something... ill see what sort of fish terry gets first before i make a decision i guese

Jordan if you can stretch your budget to buy a 2nd hand 4.3m open tinny with a tiller steer 25 or 30hp on it, it will give you a heap of options. Although they can be handy no need for floors or casting decks or built in tanks, just nav lights, a good esky and safety gear will do.

Cheap to run, easy to handle on your own (a biggy when you want to go fishing and none of your mates are available) and can sneak into places slightly bigger boats can't while still giving you some leeway in deteroirating weather in the bay. Great for two people slowing progressively with 3 and 4 people. Gets a bit damp doing overnighters but you forget that with one or two good fish coming in plus it should not be a problem for your car to tow.

I can see some good value in yaks for beach launching and sneaking around in very skinny water but I know what I would prefer to be in after a 6 hour session or with weather closing in on me.

waldo thanks heaps for that, what do you think they would cost? idealy id like to just drop over a paternoster at a reef near moreton or something and just have a snooze haha maybe chase some longtails on the way home. all i can really think of doing in the kayak is doing some trolling which would be awesome, but still pretty restrictive (did i just make that word up?!) compared to a boat.

I can tell you which I would prefer to be in after a 14 hour session, 25 kilometres (not very far in that time, because we were moving very slowly for the barra) and 20 knot winds with 2 ft chop at Awoonga. All to come back the next day and do it again :)

And it's not a boat:)

Jordan if you get a Hobie, you can easily hold your position through very slow peddling so you can cast, jig, drift etc.

Mud isn't that far away, you can easily get to it by kayak. Just keep in mind you can do 8km/h fairly easily in a hobie, that's a 2 hour trip to moreton if yuo leave from Bribie.

You can easily get offshore - places like GC, sunny coast etc. There's a number of reefs within 8kilometres so you can get there in under an hour.

One great thing about yaks is stealth. Seriously, the number of times I've literally run over fish with my kayak is phenominal. And as you would know - we had tuna jumping around us last year.

As for pricing, a smidge under $2500 for Revo + ST fins (go faster fins) + Trax Cart (a lot better on sand and other stuff than stock) + Sailing Rudder (bigger rudder than stock for better turning), $300-400 for sounder, $300? for GPS, $150 for rod holders + mounts for sounder = you have one freaking awesome fishing platform.

To be honest I'm a bit out of touch with 2nd hand boat prices now but looking at some for sale there are tinnies with some good younger boats (less than 4years old) with upto 40hp with decent bells and whistles in the 6-8k range but I wouldn't be afraid to look at less optioned unpainted older boats but with a newer motor. An older boat (10-15years or even a little older at the right price) with 3mm sides or better will in most cases have plenty of life left in it and should go for a deal less than 5000.

yea i actually saw one of those at hervey bay, seemed to cut through the chop really well. they are really big though...

Well Jordan if you want to borrow one obligation free just as a mate just ask.

No worries there.

For someone who fishes your style you may really appreciate the live well/bait tank anyway.

Jordan as you know i fish only from my yak, I have an old tinny sitting here that had electric etc setup, I have not used the tinny in over 18 months now. IF your looking for something that can get you into the skinniest of creeks yet still head offshore and chase some bigger pelagics, and you want hands free fishing man you cant go past the hobies. If you want to borrow mine sometime just give me a yell

I catch better and more consistantly from the yak than from any other vessel

lol far out steve... that looks like it would cost more than my supra though... is that yours?

Yeah mate thats my puppy

I have had more boats than I can point a stick at, Centre consols, half cabs, cuddy, bass/barra punts, side consols. You can stick them. They are a pain in the freckle is all I can say.

Yaks are sooooo much easier, no ramp rage, bugger all cleaning, no rego, no extra fuel bils, no servicing .... where do ya stop.

Anyway, there is always others with boats that you can sneak on every now and then as a decky, or even slip onto a charter every now and then.

Jordan, the best boat that you can ever fish out of is always someone else's ;)

Slip up and see Mal at Cooroy and try one out for a few hours or Craig down the coast at Adventure Outlet. Save your coin and get a Hobie straigt up, wish I did but hindsight is a beautiful thing
